I know the ztech stock is pretty good with the DOHC, 4 valves per cylinder and 130 rated HP.
But there is always room for improvements. Unless the engine is useless now, I don't know where you could start.
You might not get your money back in resell value so personally I don't think it's worth it.
Look around on line and see if someone has already attempted this.

All the "Tuner Guys" compare the Focus to all the imports, and all the upgrades are there. It all depends on what you want to do. You can at least get a K & N cold air intake, Iridium spark plugs, Better wires. That will give you at least 5-15 more horses, and maybe better mpg.

No, not really. If you want a race car, buy a mustang. A souped up focus just looks like a riceburner.

mine had headers, cold air kit , traction lock and upgraded cams and would keep up with alot of v8's.checkout fordracing.com
