You can normally tell if a cat is happy if they like to be affectionate towards you. An affection cat can show alot. Also if a cat purrs it means that he/she is happy. A playful cat is happy, and a cat that likes to give and get attention from you.

Contrary to popular belief, purring is not always done because a cat is happy. It is, however, likely to be the case.

Also, if your cat is relaxed and comfortable, it will start to preen itself or clean itself. This is when they are least likely to pay attention to the world around them so they have to be very comfortable and confident of their surroundings. (Birds are the same)

Also, when your cat is lying about, as they often do, perhaps you've seen those eyes drift shut but the ears keep moving. That's a happy cat, very contented.

The cat will be alert, tail up, ears forward, they will engage you in conversation, play, or just sleep in your presence. They are relaxed. They are sure they are in charge.

It is easier to tell when they aren't happy. They act out with destructive behaviors, scratching furniture and walls, marking their territory, swear at each other and when they are REALLY mad they flip their tails at you. Or bite you. Apologies and cat treats may may a difference. But don't count on it.

Well is he jumping around and playing?
If a cat was distressed in anyway, it would stop eating and start to lose weight.
This happened to us when we went on vacation. Just got lonely but the minute we got home everything was back to normal.
If the cat is eating it's probably happy.

Cat are from another planet! LOL! It's sometime hard to tell if their happy or not. If your cat is lying around sleeping that's just what cats do. they eat sleep purr when they want attention and scratch and bite if their mad or offended!

A simple way to check is look at it's tail. If the tail is up it's happy, if the tail is down or sagging it's sad.
