I'd also recommend a labrador. They are intelligent enough to be trained for inside and out and not to eat your other animals. They are also extremely friendly and love company ALL the time.

Honestly, the best breed you could go for is a mutt (mixed breed). Depending on what mix it is, most mutts are well tempered and they have the added advantage of not getting as many of the health issues as purebreds; since most purebred dogs in the U.S. have been overbred and have poor immune systems. Boxers stomachs tie in knots and have horrible gas, pugs and other small breeds with flat faces have respiratory problems...etc. I'm a pretty big advocate for animal shelter adoptions or taking in strays. I have two mix breed dogs (a lab/rot mix and a chow/unknown) and both are exceptionally good dogs. Also, if you choose a shelter dog you can find an adult that is the exact size you want and most shelters, like the Humane Society, will be able to tell you if the dog is good with children and other animals. Good Luck!

Actually I think the best dogs (in my experience) have been "mutts" or shelter dogs. There are wonderful pure breeds, too, but purebreeds tend to be more intense (maybe because they are bred for a particular purpose.) Visiting animal shelters are great...some dogs are problem dogs and should be avoided if you have other pets or children, but if you talk with the staff they know all the animals well and may have a return policy that would allow you to return the animal if it isn't appropriate for your situation.
On a side note, greyhounds are GREAT with kids and other animals. They're easy to find because they are taken off the track for retirement so often, and so far every greyhound i've met has been calm and sweet.

In my opinion...a Lab. I have a choc lab. He is the sweetest most lovable dog ever. He loves the neighbors kids and always wants to play. Stays in on his own property and never really strays. I have yet to see him show is teeth. Every now and then I try to antagonize him and take toys away from him just to test him and he doesn't do a thing but sit there looking at me. I know a few people who have gotten labs since meeting my dog and they feel the same. they all have young children and their labs are great around them and other animals.

Definately not a cockerspaniel. Really. Cockers tend to chase around squirrels, rabbits and birds...really bad..
I know a lot of people with poodles that did well with children..Some airedale terriers too....

It's a really good site. To find the right breed for you, go on the website and click on "Take a Breed Quiz" on the right. I hope it helps.

it depend you want to know the parent deminor first whether they're agressive or they're calm, then you can choose the type thers the beagle, the staffy (a very loyal dog), even though they get a bad rep they're good dogs, the grey hound or the miniature called the whippet theyre very energetic but it all comes down to what you're looking for Hope Ive Been Of Some Help

I would recommend a Lab.
There great with kids and animals.
Our picks the cat up by the head (obviously the cat hates it) but the dog's mouth is gentle and he never hurts her. The cat objects because usually her head is wet.

Pugs and boxers are good, medium-sized dogs to have around kids. Plus, they have short hair, so less hair mess!
