Mardi Gras is actually only one day, but the festival, like the Christmas season, lasts weeks.

Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday," the day before the fasting of lent begins on Ash Wednesday. The festival is a way to burn off some steam and eat & drink yourself silly before joining in the Catholic custom of fasting during the season leading up to Easter, when you can begin eating and drinking normally again.

Means "Fat Tuesday". "Getting it all out of your system" before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday.

Sometimes we call it "Carnival" - or "farewell to meat" "Carne" = meat..."va" = go

In New Orleans it begins with parades a week or two before Shrove Tuesday. But it really gets going the weekend before.
