It's possible. To think God CAN'T or would REFUSE to instruct an animal...would just be stupid if you claim to be a Christian. God does what God wants to do. If He wanted to become a stalk of celery for some reason, He'd do that.
Really though...the dog belonged to the hikers. He was loyal to them, and dogs do sometimes sense when there's trouble. It's just as possible that the dog chose to stay with the people because he knew there was a problem, or because he was part of their 'pack'. People have used dogs to keep warm for eons. The band 3 Dog Night got it's name from this idea.

I don't think God talks to animals but I think God created animals and thus allowed the dogs to use their animal instincts to keep the people warm and such. Dogs have great sense of smell and hearing and many dogs have saved many lives over the years. We have to give some credit to animals when it is deserved. But I don't think God talks to animals like He has talked to people in the Bible.

No, I think it is due to the fact that animals may actually be a lot more intelligent and caring than we give them credit for.

well some animals are very intelligent more so then some humans anyway maybe they were guided and maybe not maybe it was their instincts that took over
