I have done this with PS7 by selecting it with Magnetic Lasso, then Cutting and Pasting to a new canvas with white (or other colored) background. Set Magnetic Lasso to a small pixel boundary so you do not get a visible dividing line.

Good Luck

I believe you're referring to the Extract filter (under filters). It allows you to do a rough outline of an object to separate it from the background.
The link below will take you to a great free video tutorial by Burt Monroy on using Extract.

incredibly relies upon on the version of playstation you have, yet I run CS4, and in case you bypass to filter out/Pixelate/color Halftone and play around with the settings in it, you are able to greater or much less get that old comedian e book type look. REVISION: So I tinkered with it myself, and used a picture I had. I messed with the "Watercolor" result on the foremost layer, making the colors incredibly come out greater from one yet another in assessment. I then had one greater layer I had duplicated in the past that step and added the colour Halftone result, then replaced its opacity result to color evade (you ought to alter the mode to regardless of you think of looks appropriate). It gave it a particularly staggering comedian e book result. you would be able to additionally mess with the Cutout filter out on between the underlying layers, which helped mine some too. It incredibly kinda relies upon on what your significant photograph is.
