Are you a working or stay at home mom? Just curious to see if either one has a greater percentage of spanking. Not making any judgments here, just curious.

Working mom. I have spanked hands that have gone too close to the stove, and once I popped a cheek that was entirely too disrespectful for words.

But timeouts and removal of privileges works wonders for me.

I work full time but it is an overnight position in a group home where I get to sleep, so I am home and awake during the day from 9 am to 9 pm.
I do spank on a very occasional basis. It is usually a last resort after all else fails, therefore I don't need to resort to that very often. Praising my children for being good when they are good makes them behave better, because they enjoy the praise that they get for it. As far as discipline goes, time out and then a discussion, or a day of not being able to play with the neighbors, use the phone, or watch TV seems to be enough to do the trick. If they continue to push I add another day. If it gets any worse than that I resort to a spanking. (With just an open hand, and I would never hit them anywhere other than their behind. I was slapped in the face as a child and found it to be very degrading. I was also spanked, but only when I deserved it.) My kids generally know not to take it that far- The loss of privileges seems to sink in most of the time.

I work. I rarely spank, because usually threatening to works wonders. She is 8 and she is going thru a phase where she thinks every 5 minutes she needs to get out of bed for something, whether it be her tummy hurts, or something is in her eye, or the latest is her toenails need to be clipped. I think she is just stalling to go to sleep so I threaten to spank her. Time outs wouldn't work, it defeats the purpose of getting her in bed and staying there. But, I have spanked her in the past, but lately, just threatening does the trick for me. I guess it all depends on the child and the offense in which they are being punished for. If she was taking a cookie out of the cookie jar, I'd take it, eat it front of her and offer a cookie to everyone else but her for stealing and if she threw a fit, she'd get a spank and maybe more. Who knows. I just hate parents that are too lenient and then the kids end up running the household rather then the other way around. Kids need to be disciplined now more then ever these days because so much temptation is out there.

We have three boys (10, 8 & almost 6). We have not had to spank our boys for a loooooong time. They learned quickly that when mom & dad said something, we meant it. I am a stay at home/working mom (I do my husband's transcription & I work horses), my husband is a trauma surgeon. I think the last time we actually had to spank one of them, the middle one was 4 & he was told NOT to throw the soccer ball in the house. I came in from outside just in time to see the soccer ball go sailing through the plate glass window. YES!!!! he was spanked & sent to his room for the rest of the day. I have no idea when the last time it was for the other 2, I just know that we haven't had spank any of them in at least 4 years. The youngest use to have his hand smacked when he was learning to walk & didn't stay out of things. Other than that, nope....We never have had a lot of trouble with any of the three. They are sweet, gentle, loving, considerate, helpful kids.

I'm a stay at home mom and i spank my daughter. Not very often just usually to get my point across when she is doing something that can be dangerous for herself and "NO" isn't working. I never spank my daughter in anger i don't feel like its fair.

When I was little my mom had a daycare...so she was pretty much a stay-at-home mom and she spanked us when we needed it.

Then, after the daycare she got a job at a hospital so she worked and we were spanked when she worked too.

There isn't a greater percentage in one than another. It all depends on the parent and how the parent was raised and stuff. All of my friends' parents except one spanked as well. (I am almost 14.)

This was a good question. =D

I am a stay at home, and I only spank mine when they need to wake up and pay attention to what they are doing, like walking out into the street or something like that.

At the present time.. I'm stay at home... and yes.. firmly believe in spanking.... There's a HUGE difference between spanking and beating!!! I got a grand total of maybe 5 spankings in my life... (learned from older siblings mess ups)... and I was very soft hearted... so it didn't take much to correct me. The one's that I got didn't really hurt.. but hurt my feelings... however, they made me respect my parents. Like the bible says... "spare the rod, spoil the child". I think this is what's wrong with kids today, I would never have DREAMED of taking a gun or knife to school!!!! The government has totally taken discipline away from the parents!!!
