Most highschool (and I'm assuming that your in highschool) track teams have 18 different events. So chances are that you will be able to find something that you are good at or at least enjoy doing. Most first time athletes tend to try either the throwing events or the sprinting events. Sprints because theythink that they are fast, or throws because they don't want to do any running. I would say if you really don't know what it is that you want to do, try things. Most coaches will try and steer you towards an event that they think that you will be good at. I'm sure that you will be able to find something that you like.

Do you like to sprint, hav good endurance can go for a while, flexible have some spring/jumping ability. That's where you start. If you can go for a long time try distance mile etc, maybe long jump if you've got some speed but not blistering speed, coordination try triple jump or even high jump, 400M hurdles. at least try for a relay again some endurance try the 4X 4 relay at least you have 3 other people to depend on in case you are shy and afraid you'll look silly in front of everyone(don't worry about that we all weren't perfect doing something for the 1st time), field events are good, shot put is a good event to try 1st year, discus/javelin takes some getting used to and too technical to get just right. try a few and see what you like and are good at, you have time to develop into a star in 3/4yrs. Plus your coach will see your ability and know where to steer you if he/she sees the event you picked is not your strong suit.
good luck, have fun, it's a great sport.

well...what are u good at in terms of running? are u quick and fast ? if u are run sprints. if u can jump....maybe u should do the long jump or triple jump.

if ur strong and/or a larger person...maybe u can throw the shot put or discus.

if u wanna lose weight (like some of the girls on my track team when i was in hs) and dont really care to much about competing or are not fast but have endurance...run distance.

only tips are...get ready to run...a lot!
