Technically, you're available to work 24-7. Whenever you're called, you go. No questions, just make it happen.
In reality, you work a normal week, while not deployed. It's not normal to work nights or weekends unless you're on a shift job like the MPs, or your unit is getting ready for a deployment.
Sometimes being deployed is easier than being at home. There are plenty of soldiers sitting on their thumbs in the Green Zone or some cushy LSA, drawing combat pay for doing pretty much nothing. It all depends on what job you have and what unit you're with, and what mission they have.

All branches of the military are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In my experience in the Navy, in port and on shore duty you NORMALLY worked 8 hours a day and depending on how many duty sections you were in, you would be on duty every 3rd to 8th day. On duty week days, you would work your normal 8 hours, plus stand a 4 hour watch. I would work some over on week days and week end duty days because I could get more work done without all the interruptions. At sea, it was/is not unusual t work 12 hour days, 7 days a week. For flight deck personnel on carriers during flight operations, 12-16 hour days were/are not unusual. All these extra hours are without overtime pay or compensatory time off.

depending on the base that you are located at also determines how often you work. While not deployed you will usually see 5 days a week unless it is a holiday, and work can be anywhere from 9-12 depending on PT, and work schedule. My husband works 9-4, not counting PT and he gets 11-1 off for lunch, he works on computers. While deployed it can be anywhere from 8 our days to 20 hour days with maybe a day off maybe not. Some bases have half day Thursdays for training, some do not.

Depends on the job, Drill SGT's work awful hours, most combat arms work longer/unusual hours but for logistical stuff, it's pretty much an 8 hour day.

To be quite honest, it's a 24 hour 7 day a week job, no kidding. They may not be on the job that much but EVERYTHING you do reflects on the USA both on and off duty. Big reason why we don't get paid "by the hour".

Vietnam experience w/Combat infantry....no down time 24/7; the option, maybe die in service to your country. In the rear areas, generally a 12 hour day was the approximate norm.
I assume current combat service folks are still on 24/7. Being in a war zone has that effect on duty time.

On a normal week, in the US, we work from 0600-1700 with weekends off. If we are training in the field, we usually work about 20 hours per day. When I was in Iraq, we worked seven days a week, 18+ hours daily.

There's really no single correct answer to this. How much you work is determined by your MOS and also by your unit.
Many stateside soldiers work 8 hour days, depending on their job field. Others work longer hours and sometimes you have additional duties like CQ and such.
