I live in Maryland and a lot of my friends frown upon going to UMD, but it seems like a lot flock to other state schools such as UVA and UNC... Is this a general teenage tendency to go to schools out of their state, or do such schools hold a higher name value?

I'd say yes, in general they frown upon it, at least for kids who are high achieving enough to get into out-of-state schools and they also would have to want to get away from where they're from.
I really don't like where I live (Iowa) and hadn't wanted to go to school here (5 out of the 6 schools I applied to were out-of-state), but I ultimately ended up going to an in-state public school because of the cost.

I think that the tendency of teenagers is to get as far away from home as possible, so that parents won't be looking over their shoulder.

I think that going to an in state school is beneficial, though. Cheaper tuition is the biggest perk. There are plenty of schools that are too far for drop in visits, but close enough that you can make a weekend trip home.

Other than schools themselves having a bad reputation in one state, I don't know why prospective undergrads would not want to go to an in state school other than to get farther away from home. Tuition is usually a lot cheaper for an undergraduate in an in state school.

that is no longer inevitably undesirable, yet in numerous fields that's harder to get into the graduate branch in the college the place one won their undergrad degeree. it incredibly is in all probability because of the fact there are various gifted pupils and a super sort of human beings do usually prepare to their undergrad for grad paintings. the dept then ought to be greater selective approximately who they settle for.
