I am hoping to build a fence tall enough to keep a cat in. It will also have a negative edge to prevent them from jumping into the wall and then scaling over the top.

Well, my neighbors cat scales my 6 foot privacy fence with no trouble and there's nothing for it to grab onto to get over it. So I'd say higher than that. It really depends on the cat though, some can jump much higher than others can.

...to about the third shelf in my refrigerator. Well I would say you have to make it higher than 5 feet tall, my cat could definitely jump that. Make it taller than necessary so your cats don't get the idea that it's short enough to MAYBE get over on a running start, so they'll try it. You know how cats start to think after being on the "nip" all night. I personally would go with 7 and 1/2 or 8 feet because there's no way they can get over that.

I'd say depends on the cat. My female cat can easily jump 6 feet from the floor to the top of the entertainment center, and I've also caught her on the top of my doors which are taller than that. She may have climbed up there somehow though.

My boy kitty though has trouble getting onto the bed sometimes but he's also pretty pudgy :p

I doubt there is a fence tall enough to contain a housecat. Even though my cat is declawed he somehow managed to get over a 10-foot privacy fence.
