You have 9 golf balls, 8 of which are equal in weight. The 9th is slightly heavier than the rest. You also have a balancing scale. How can you use this scale only 2 times in order to tell which ball is heavier?

ANSWER : Seperate the balls into 3 groups of 3. Place 3 balls on the left and 3 on the right. If they balance out, you know that the heavier ball is not one of these 6. If one side is heavier, you know that the heavier ball is one of those 3. Now for your 2nd use of the scale, place one of 3 remaining balls on the left and 1 on the right. If they are equal, then it was the ball that was left out that is heavier. If either side is heavier, then obviuosly that is your heavier ball.

Separate the balls into 3 groups of 3. Place 3 balls on the left side of the scale and 3 balls on the right. If they balance out, you know that the heavier ball is not one of those 6. If one side is heavier, you know that the heavier ball is one of those 3.

Then once you know which set of 3 has the heavier ball, you choose any 2 of them and weigh, one on each side. If they balance out you know the final ball is heavier. If they don't balance, well, obviously the heavier ball is the one you are looking for.

Divide the balls as:
A1, A2, A3
B1, B2, B3
C1, C2, C3

Now put A and B balls on scale,if they are equal then heavier ball is from C.
Then put C1 and C2 on either side of scale. If they are same, then C3 is heavier. If C1 or C2 is heavier, you will immediately know.

Same rule will apply if A and B balls are not same in weight.

Besides dividing it to 3 groups, you could:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Divide the balls into two groups.
A)4
&
B)4
If they're equal, then the 9th one, that you didnt weigh, is the heaviest.
if one side is heavier ( ex: group A ), then you divide the balls into two groups, and you weigh it from there
Note: unless you cant group the balls into 3 groups, this is an alternative.
