rubber balloons? My friend got a headache when a rubber balloon touched her head. Our teacher said that she could be having an allergic reaction. She is also allergic to many other things. (fire ants, bananas, oranges, strawberries, etc. . .)

The protein in rubber can cause an allergic reaction in some people. The thin, stretchy latex rubber in gloves, condoms and balloons is high in this protein. It causes more allergic reactions than products made of hard rubber (like tires). Also, because some latex gloves are coated with cornstarch powder, the latex protein particles stick to the cornstarch and fly into the air when the gloves are taken off. In places where gloves are being put on and removed frequently, the air may contain many latex particles.

Latex allergy can be mild or severe, with symptoms such as:

Itchy, red, watery eyes
Sneezing or runny nose
Coughing
Rash or hives
Chest tightness and shortness of breath
Shock
Some people who wear latex gloves get bumps, sores, cracks or red, raised areas on their hands. These symptoms usually appear 12 to 36 hours after contact with latex. Changing to non-latex gloves, using glove liners, and paying more attention to hand care can help relieve these symptoms.

A latex-sensitive person can also have a life-threatening allergic reaction with no previous warning or symptoms.

absolutely. most balloons are made of latex rubber...it's a fairly common allergy...fewer than 1% of the general population, but as many as 1 of 8 healthcare workers are allergic to latex.

this is highly likely if she is also allergic to bananas...the proteins are VERY similar.

the test for latex allergy, unfortunately, has a very high incidence of false negative (as i know from personal experience)

i have a severe latex allergy and have been hospitalized more than once for latex exposure. i can't eat bananas or avocados because of it...i also can't change a flat tire, use latex condoms, go into a room full of ballons, or wear most flip-flops.

there is some great info on latex allergy at http://familydoctor.org/254.xml

good luck!

She might not be allergic to the balloon. The balloon might be made of latex and she might be allergic reaction to it.

Yes, it's quite possible. Many people have latex allergies. Things like surgical gloves, condoms, and other latex items can cause all sorts of reactions.
