Why do we laugh at children when they talk to imaginary friends, but take adults seriously when they do it?

i have always wondererd about this too. My question would be what is the difference between a person 2000 years ago who said he spoke to god, and the dozens of clinically insane people i've seen on TV specials. or even everyday in the subway the homeless people saying they spoken to God or jesus.....how can we actually say 1 is right and 1 is just crazy?

Gazoo's right... its just not cute anymore when an adult is delusional. Some such people believe they'll be rewarded with eternal paradise for murdering innocent people.

We should take it seriously but only the same way we take other mental problems seriously.

Cause an adult has had their mind and judgment cloudy over time due to age and they can't comprehend that a child will see more clearly than an adult will.

I believe them...for I have been with a child that saw imaginary people and was past petrified of them. We were visiting the grave of my (at that time) GF's son. Out of the blue the 3 yr old daughter just screamed and bolted for the car and locked herself in it. We asked her what was up, she told us about the kids standing next to the graves a few yards away watching us. GF and I walked over to those graves and what do we find....headstones to children...many of them.

Once we learn right from wrong, our "vision" starts to cloud.

Now there you go, at great question that certainly puts into play our level of consciousness. Maybe we want so bad to know what we are not prepared to understand that we somehow believe an adult has a specially ear to those beyond our own.

it relatively is fairly exciting! i do no longer think of those human beings must be ever seen "psychotic, risky, a huge gamble to society or heavily mentally ill". There are no longer any mad human beings in my opinion.There are in basic terms the misunderstood. those with imaginary friends are purely lonely. baby or person , it does not make a difference.Noone is proof against loneliness. in case you haven't any longer any friends , particularly situations you finally end up making them up. the entire technique is incredibly exciting , psychologically..

This question would be very funny (okay it is) if it weren't so sad (which it is)

The sad part is that people in this country take VERY seriously all of the reports people have of their imaginary friends 'God' and 'Jesus.' Our very president (god bless his retarded soul) claims to have been placed in the White House by such an imaginary friend.

Good grief! I never saw it this way before.

I'm going to have to keep this question in mind when someone tells me they know that 'God' has in store for me. I will say, "Oh, yeah? Well MY imaginary friend Boobaloo is going to make YOU fry in peanut oil forever for not believing in HIM!!!"

Because the majority of soceity thinks that since adults have had more time on earth than children, they must have been through loneliness over a long period of time. Children haven't been around that long and it's "stupid".

Childrens imaginary friends dont exist and cant answer prayer. God however DOES answer prayers and do miracles and has proven himself over and over to humanity. The problem is that people like you and me (in my youth) dont have faith and therefore mock what they do not understand.
