I'm Muslim...I've never known anyone that was Atheist so I don't really know anything about it. Is Atheism the rejection of religion? What are some of the beliefs and practices that you have as an Atheist?

Not necessarily the rejection of religion, but the belief that there is no supreme being.

There are atheists who are very spiritual, and those who are not. Buddhism is a religion, but it does not include worship of any creator, so some atheists can even be religious. The beliefs of atheists are as varied as atheists themselves. The only thing we all have in common is we do not believe in god.

Atheism is usually a rejection of all religion and traditional concepts of God...

The disbelief in a personal friend/savior, or any spirit in the sky watching over them...

Some beliefs of atheists? Hmm. Open any biology, astronomy, geology, physics, text book, etc.
What are some practices? Hmmm. I guess the same as everyone else, eating out, shopping, talking to friends and family and occasionally getting lucky.

As stated by most of the respondents, atheists' only common characteristic is the absence of a belief in any deity.

Western atheists tend to accept a scientific approach to evaluating evidence for beliefs. Since there is no evidence for God's existence, a belief in God's existence falls into an irrational belief system. Atheists reject irrational belief systems.

The secular humanist movement has asserted a number of ethical guidelines that many atheists accept as rationally arrived at. However, there are many atheists who do not feel any need to align themselves with any group whatsoever.

Atheism is not a religion and as such there are no collective beliefs or practices relating to it. Atheism is purely the disbelief in gods. Each atheist has his or her own views on pretty much all subjects.

Man, it's hard to believe you've never met an atheist. What country are you from?

Yes, atheism is the rejection of the idea that God exists. There is no belief, and there is no practice. Atheism is only disbelief in God, nothing more.

I believe that we humans are alone here on Earth. There is no invisible entity up in the sky that will reach down to save us from ourselves, nobody to hear our pathetic prayers, no all-powerful being to take us away to heaven if we're good, or to send us to hell if we're bad. Such notions were invented by primitive people in an age when science did not exist to help them explain the way things worked, so it seemed reasonable to them that there were invisible beings all around, making things happen and bringing disaster when they misbehaved.

Nowadays, you'd think people would know better, but they continue to cling to the notion that if they pray just the right words, go to the right synagogue, temple, or church, and read the right holy book, the god of their choice will grant their every desire. They live their whole lives not for what they can do here and now, but for what they imagine they will receive when they die. I ask you, of what use is such a belief system to humanity as a whole? It is time we abandon these superstitious notions and start working to achieve REAL solutions to mankind's problems, not wish the problems away with prayers and wailings to nonexistent deities. Religion has not worked in over 6000 years of recorded history; there is no reason to believe it will work now...or ever.

Although no longer atheist, Im wiccan. I was once. I didn't see it as a rejection of religion. I just hadn't found a religion that fit with how I saw my relationship with the Goddess and God.

When atheist I didn't really have a core set of beliefs or practices. I just thought if you were a good person and did good things for people that it was enough. I didnt think that there was an entity to talk with to have a relationship with.

I must commend you for being sincere and not using attacking arguements. Let me extend to you a hug of appreciation!!!!

((((((((((((((((((((((HUG))))))))))))))))))))))))))

Blessings to you always.

Atheism is the disbelief[1] in the existence of any deities.[2] It is contrasted with theism, the belief in a God or gods. Atheism is commonly defined as the positive belief that deities do not exist.[3][4][5] However, others—including most atheistic philosophers and groups—define atheism as the simple absence of belief in deities[6][7][8] (cf. nontheism), thereby designating many agnostics, and people who have never heard of gods, such as newborn children, as atheists as well.[9][10] In recent years, some atheists have adopted the terms strong and weak atheism to clarify whether they consider their stance one of positive belief (strong atheism) or the mere absence of belief (weak atheism).[11][12][13]

Many self-described atheists share common skeptical concerns regarding supernatural claims, citing a lack of empirical evidence for the existence of deities. Other rationales for atheism range from the philosophical to the social to the historical. Although atheists tend toward secular philosophies such as humanism, rationalism, and naturalism, there is no one ideology or set of behaviors that all atheists adhere to.[14][15][16]

In Western culture, atheists are frequently assumed to be irreligious or non-spiritual.[17] However, some religious and spiritual beliefs, such as several forms of Buddhism, have been described by outside observers as conforming to the broader, negative definition of atheism due to their lack of any participating deities.[18][19] Atheism is also sometimes equated with antitheism (opposition to theism) or antireligion (opposition to religion), despite many atheists not holding such views.[20]

I pray to Darwin every night.

The burden of proof in the existence of God lies in the believers. However, they have never been able to prove his existence within reason without giving a hokey response like "God is in a newborn's smile, etc.."

Someone needs to program you to beleive the way you do. You say you are Muslim, but if you were born in a Jewish household you would likely be Jewish. If you were born in a Christian household, you would likely be Christian.

While some may make the same argument for an atheist household, realize that a lack of religion is the "default" position from the time you are born.

We have little in common - its not a religion, just an absense of one.

I think there are a few things that we also have in common statistically, disbelief in anything superstitious, some degree of scientific literacy and a higher iq than average - statistically mind you and I bet thats correct.

We don't act like decent people because a father figure is threatening us with punishment because we know its right.

We know that when someone we care about dies - they're just gone, it would be nice if we could see them again but we wont. Life isnt what we'd like - only what it is. We have no delusions.
