i took my dad to the doc and doc says dad has a polyp what does that mean?

A polyp is an abnormal growth from a mucus membrane. Wherever there is a mucus membrane a polyp can form and grow. You can have nasal polyps (my brother was a smoker and he had one removed from his throat), cervical polyps (ladies, remember your pelvic exams?) intestinal polyps (oh, those fun colonoscopies we get after turning 50). When polyps are caught early, there is generally no problem. They tend to be small and pink and cute as polyps go. It's when they grow to be obstructions or develop into nasty tumors that they become a problem.

It's a good thing your dad's doc caught the polyp. There are a lot of things they can do. If it is just one polyp and it's small, no sweat. It just means he will have to have regular check-ups to clear up any others that would make an appearance.
