Great idea! However, due to idiotic restrictive immigration policies, they cna't even get in legally, much less apply for citizenship (can take up to 20 years, 14 is typical)
It's the common sense thing though, and many think that helping US people with jobs and the economy and already absorbing into the culture somewhat would help them become citizens. In a commonsense world, it would. In a commonsense world though, we would allow anyone to become a citizen as soon as a short waiting period is completed (1-2 years) somebody can take the citizenship test and become a US citizen.
However, a lot of people ave a huge fear of other human being who do not have skin as white as theirs, and that's keeping us on 'protecting our borders' rather then 'how can we help human beings to live in a free nation?'

They're not qualified for citizenship because they're not here legally in the first place.
BTW, if we made them legal, they would then demand the rights of legals--more pay, medical benefits, retirement, etc. Their cost to the company would then equal the cost of an American. The companies would look around for someone cheaper to hire and--guess what! --they'd find a willing workforce from Mexico sneaking over the border. And we'd have the problem all over again.
They claim Americans don't want these jobs. Well, if they'd pay decent, we would.
I'll bet the same claims were made in the Old South every time someone mentioned freeing the slaves. And in the 1950's whenever people talked about equal rights for Blacks.
We CAN send these people back to Mexico. The economy would adjust, and we'd all be better off for it.

because it's pretty much immpossible to become a US citizen if you are from mexico or south america unless you have some strange circumstances. right now the wait to even get permanent residency is like...20 years. and those guys you see on the corner...we don't give citizenship to people like them. (i say this with sarcasm, in no way to i mean to imply they don't deserve citizenship if they went through legal means.)

Unfortunately, most of those laborers are here illegally! probably don't have a Green Card and are exploited by those individuals that pick them up for work. They do not get paid the same amount that legals get. It's a sad situation.

Most third world illegals come to the U.S. for personal economic reasons. Most do not come to cherish our democratic system. Many so called "immigration rights" groups "fan the fire" with their rhetoric which encourages immigrants to preserve their culture and language at tax payers expense. Among some of these groups, the word "assimilation" is considered xenophobic. When ultimately illegal immigrants and/or their children do become voting citizens, many vote in blocks (Mexican-American, El Salvadoran-American, Guatemalan-American, etc.), not for the good of America, but for personal economic gain usually at the expense of another group.

Those laborers you see hoping to get work, need the money today to help their families. Becoming a citizen is lengthy & they cannot afford to wait. The quota for each country is different, our quota for Mexico is probably filled already. There are provisions to becoming a citizen, many Mexicans cannot meet the requirements.

They are considering citizenship - they are ALL hoping for amnesty. However I sure hope they never get it. They only way to help America is to LEAVE. They are ALL criminals for being here.
