When anyone sins, and we all have (Rom. 3:23; 6:23), he deserves eternal separation from God (Isaiah 59:2). Yet, because of His love and mercy, God became a man (John 1:1,14 ) and bore the sins of the world in His body on the cross (1 Pet. 2:24; 1 John 2:2). We are forgiven when we realize that there is nothing we can do to earn the favor of God and we put our trust in what Jesus did for us on the cross (Eph. 2:8-9; 1 Cor. 15:1-4). Only God saves. The only thing we bring to the cross is our sin.
Thus for man to receive forgiveness, repentance is necessary (Luke 17:3-4). For the holy God to extend forgiveness, the shedding of blood is necessary (Heb. 9:22; Lev. 17:11). Forgiveness is based upon the sacrifice of Christ on the cross.

When Jesus died He knew you. He knew all the sins that you would commit long before you were born. He knew me, too. and every other person. That is an awesome thought. That when He died He was thinking of you and me. People need to realize that He did know them. When you say the Christ died for the world, it sounds impersonal, like yeah, yeah, I have heard all that before. But when you can truly understand by the power of the Holy Spirit that Jesus died for you and knew you it is both awesome and terrible. Terrible, because when you realize that your sin caused this loving individual to die it will break your heart. Thank God He does not leave us in that state, but brings us to the joy of His Resurrection so now we have a living High Priest in Heaven. Remember, Jesus was man but He is God also.

Actually, Adam and Eve committed the first sin and it has been passed down through DNA through all of mankind so even today each one of us is born with sin. Jesus died that our sin, plus the many sins that we have committed can be bought and payed for by the sacrifice of His blood. This is called Redemption. Salvation is a gift from God of eternal life and forgiveness from those sins. We can only obtain salvation by recognizing Jesus as the Son of God and believing that He died for our sins and that in resurrecting He is able to give us eternal life.

Its just a saying that means that God was pretty much sick of man and all his sins,
and even after he made the first covenant they kept sinning, and so he sent his "son" down to help out , but man kept sinning.
And so God was like, OK that's it, time to start over,
but Jesus died to show how much he wanted man to be forgiven, and it was that act that saved all of mankind.
It does NOT however forgive you for YOUR personal sins!
It is just more of forgiveness for the basic flaws of the human race (ak: the seven deadly sins) that all people have and must struggle against.
It was the point at which forgiveness took the place of justice as the focus for the religion.

Well, let me ask you this....Take the a couple of the 10 commandments for example. Do not lie. Have you ever lied? Any lie at all, even a 'white' one. Do not steal. Have you ever stolen anything? Even something 'small'. Do not covet. Have you ever been jealous of someone and burned inside wanting what they had? Do not misuse the name of God. Ever used his name in any way that would be considered rude? If you've even done one of these things, only once in your life, you have sinned. BIble says we have all sinned and fall short of being good in God's eyes. Problem with sin is that GOd is perfect and holy and cannot be around sin. God had set rules and punishments for sin. But He loves us so much that he wanted to be in a relationship with us. So He came up with a plan that would allow the penalties of sin to be paid for. In the old testament in order to be considered good with God, they had to sacrifice animals. God's plan was to come to earth as a man , Jesus, and for Jesus to be sacrificed and die for all sins of all men. All we have to do is receive it and beleive He did this for us. (Romans 10:9)

Christians believe that Jesus was sacrificed as an offering to their god so that regular sacrifices were no longer needed (lambs, bulls, etc.).
Even though I grew up Christian and went to Sunday school every week for about 15 years, I never really understood the whole "died for our sins" part though.

He died for the sins of mankind, which both of us and everyone on this forum fall into that category.
He died that we would not suffer the penalty for our sins, which is death, if we accept His free gift to us and accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior.
For those who add baptism as a requirement to have eternal life, they are calling Jesus a liar, since Jesus said, 'and this is eternal life, that they know the Father in heaven and His Son whom He sent.
Baptism is an act of obedience of every Christian, but the lack of baptism does not mean eternal damnation or Jesus lied.

Jesus died for the sins of every person who has lived, lives, or will live on the face of this planet. He died for everyone's sins regardless of when they were born or will be born.

He died for the sins of ALL mankind. Everyone, not just a select few or for those in a certain time period. Time and time again in the bible it says "whosoever". It does not say Whosoever in this period of time, or whosoever in this region, it just says whosoever. There is a lot more detail that could go into this but I really don't want to take up that much space.
