How easy is it to do better. Surely we can do better than a few lunatics and ignorant crusty-ole insecure kill-joys from thosands of years ago.

Here, watch this, I will just quickly brainstorm out a better code to live by:

Code of Pragmatic People:

1. Make choices based on whats in the interest of you and your community.

2. Golden Personal Rule - Treat strangers as you would want to be treated but cease from this behavior where the stranger perceives this as "weakness".

3. Golden Political Rule - Respect strange cultures from the beginning and withdraw respect where the alien culture is incapable or unwilling of doing the same

4. Modern Utilitarianism - Resist the temptation to "judge" people, like a religious person does, or create drama where it didnt exist. Seek first to accept all things or conduct which do no direct harm to you or pose no significant threat to you.

Ex: Homosexuals shouldnt be condemned for what "they" chose to do with "their" lives.

Ex: Today and throughout history, Islam has proven to be the most intolerant social/political force the world has ever know. Therefore an educated practical person, should reject any manifestation of Islam in his environment.

How are people going to do any better on their own pray tell? You've got to be kidding.
I mean those look like nice philosophical ideas, but hardly practical.
Every one needs a change of faith, and heart that can only come through faith, and repentence of Jesus. In fact Jesus went to the cheaters, prostitutes, uneducated, lame, the leopers, and rejected of society to give help, forgiveness, and healing to. If a person is judgemental in a harsh way then they really don't understand the ways of God.
The only way I've changed my attitudes, and sinful nature is by turning away from them, and asking for forgiveness for what I've done. Then only through His power have I've been able to do any thing really good.
Only the price paid at calvary and the resurrection is the hope for mankind in my experience. Not just good intentions on my part.

Interesting.
At the same time you forget that most of these ideas had their roots in religion.
I agree, religious beliefs may give way to philosophy, then to science.

Oops, that has happened with hundreds of religious ideas already! We're too late!

At the same time, we seem to have just as much religion! Where is it coming from?

Perhaps it isn't "religion" that is the problem, but the confusion people feel over it's role in our world? Perhaps we HAVE to have some way to explore the things we can't test, and can't see repeated, else ignore those ideas and stagnate in any area that we can't prove or test to the satisfaction of our senses.

There are alwasy better codes. What price will we pay to get them? What will we lose because another "believes" so strongly in those codes that they will force them on us all?

Keep exploring them. Keep sharing them. But know that ignorance of the roots of philosophy and science (religion) condemns you to never understanding a process that continues today and can only lead to a scientific and philosophical stagnation where the shoulders of giants have moved on.

With those of us who see them clearly riding atop them.
