do you put it in the address line?

It can be on the second line after the street name (if there is enough space on the envelope) or it can be on the third line by itself. You want it to stand out so the postman will readily see it so I like to put a comma or a long dash in-between to set the number apart.

The post office reads addresses from bottom to top: Zip code, state, city, house # & street, apt.# then name
John Smith
Apt.# 1
123 Main St.
or
John Smith
123 Main St., Apt #1
