my dog likes to attack smaller dogs when they pass by his door how can i train him not to?

Question

i opened my door just recently to go grab the newspaper and my dog rushed out because a smaller dog ran in front of my house no damage was taken and i paid for the full service for getting the other dog to the vet. i needto know how cna i train my dog to listen to me and not attack smaller dogs . this only happens with small dog because when hes going against a bigger dog he is more friendly and wants to play so what can i do to prevent this from happening again and my dog is a german/ greatdane mix.

you should watch The Dog Whisperer on Animal Planet for some ideas. Generally you need to show the dog you are in charge so it will obey you. You will need to carefully expose your dog to little dogs in a controlled setting with someone who knows how to train dogs. You will reinforce good behavior, and give the dog the message that you are in charge when there is bad behavior.

Always put him on a leash before opening the door. Sounds like your dog is a big coward lol. I say find a little dog that can kick his butt and then he will think twice about being a bully. On a more serious note, the next dog he tries to attack see if you can formally introduce them. Keep your dog on his leash and let him sniff the other dog, but not get close enough to attack him and make sure you have him fully under control. Or even better see if you have a friend with a small dog that would let you do this.

Your pooch has issues. I'd say a shock collar might help. If you have friends with small dogs willing to risk their pup's safety, let your dog roll out of the house for the chase and have another friend with a hose. Spray him for all it's worth and maybe he'll get the message.
