Here is the website for renewing your British passport here in the US.
http://www.britainusa.com/sections/articles_show_nt1.asp?d=1&i=41001&L1=10080&L2=41001&a=25297

I applied for one myself last year and received it within 2 weeks as I needed it to go away. Usually they renew it within 6 weeks otherwise.
It was straight forward, the info on the British Embassy site is quite clear.
If you still got the I-94 card in your passport, take it out before you send passport off. You must keep hold of that until your new passport arrives then you put it in that one.

Now if you don't have the legal docs to stay here in the US, that is another matter. British Embassy can help you with the passport and may give you advice about how to get back to England.
Immigration are the only people to sort out your legal papers.
Remember if you don't have the legal papers sorted out whilst you are here, once you leave, you might not be able to return to the US in the future, or barred for so many years.
I think you should talk to an immigration attorney to see if they can help with your legal papers.

If you are really desperate to go back to England, and in a hurry, you can try calling the airlines and explaining your circumstances. Depending for what reason they can give you a discounted price on your air ticket.

Good luck

If you are from England you cannot get a passport from the U.S. post office!!! I cannot believe someone will tell you this!!!!!! You have to go to your embassy or consulate, and get a new passport. I also recommend to visit a lawyer, since you were married and together for 7 years and your American husband was a drug addict you might have legal rights to become a resident. But, I'm not a lawyer, so I urge you to visit an immigration lawyer.

If all you want to do is leave the USA then just go to your nearest British consulate to get a new passport. Whether you do this now or nearer the time of your intended departure is your call - but I'd prefer to have a valid passport to hand if I were to be caught unlawfully present in on foreign soil since one could be deported more easily and thus avoid detention time.

RHsunder thinks you are a U.S. citizen. You say your husband did not file for your legal papers, I am guessing you mean he did not file for your green card, if this is the case and you have no legal status you cannot return as an immigrant, but only as a visitor and if you have state identification card / driver license, credit cards, own a home in the U.S. you could be refused entry on the visa waiver I-94W, on the basis that you would be considered an intending immigrant. Consult an immigration attorney now so you can save to get this problem taken care of.

Go to a post office and inquire about getting a new passport. You will need two pictures (many stores do passport photographs), your old passport, and about $100. If the new passport is to be issued under a different name than the old one, take documentation to show the name change (such as a copy of a marriage certificate).
