No - it sounds like tolerance is a bad thing and I know that is rubbish. Tolerance is the virtue of the smart, kind and fair man. If you want folks to tolerate you, then you must tolerate them. This quote just seems wrong and not worth bothering about.
Peace!

To answer the question, yes. "Tolerance" is a hot-button word, but Chesterton wants us to think about how convictions are more important. We must take a stand for what is right, but we must also show love to those who believe differently than we do. "Love the sinner, but hate the sin," is how to show tolerance in the right way.

Yes it does. And I have one that I like: What we accept, we deserve, what we do not try to change, we deserve.
We can be tolerance but only to point where our reasoning tells us that something is just wrong. Accepting something that one knows is wrong, is not being tolerant, it is being without morals or convictions. And just when will this tolerance have an end point?

Can one's conviction not be to have tolerance? What then would chesterton say?
Clearly he was a right wing shill. It's the sort of comment that screams "my religion and convictions are right and all others are wrong."

That's true but it isn't necessarily a bad thing to be without convictions. Its good to keep an open mind in some circumstances.

A person with convictions knows right from wrong and stands up for his beliefs...being tolerant means putting up with it even though you know it's wrong.

We all have convictions, so our tolerance can't be a virtue.

Only long enough to know that it is wrong. I tolerate because of my convictions.

It says that if you have some convictions, then there will be violations of those convictions which you will find intolerable. No convictions, tolerate everything.
