YES! BUT people (including Muslims) have misunderstood and twisting its real meaning. See, Jihad does NOT in any way mean terrorism; it's a mere conflict/stuggle and could be physical, emotional, mental, or even spiritual.
It doesn't in ANY WAY mean a holy war; in Islam, there's no such thing. If not this, then you must be wondering what "Jihad" means then, right? Well, the meaning of the word Jihad is 'striving'. It applies to any sort of activity made by any person because of the love for God. It covers every aspect of a muslim's life. It is Jihad when a muslim is called upon to make an extra effort -- for example, to get up before dawn in order to pray, to fast during Ramadan while abstaining from all the things which would invalidate the fast (such as lying, cheating, cursing, fighting, etc.). It is jihad when a person helps another in something good. When one does jihad, one is doing some sort of good --any type of good!-- with the mere pure intention of pleasing God; if it's not done to please God, then it's not considered jihad.
When you stop lying or cursing or fighting or letting your anger take control over you or something similar, you're committing jihad so long as you're doing it because you know that God doesn't like any of these acts and you wish to get closer to Him (and Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, stated that this kind of jihad is the best and most important one). You're doing jihad when you stand up for the truth/justice/peace, whether it has to do with religion or not. You're doing jihad when you stand up and fight for your rights (women, for instance) because you know that you're not being treated justly.
Most practically, we Muslims are doing jihad when we have to stand up for Islam here on y/a because a lot of the ignorants here are trying to spread lies against Islam, and we're here trying to clear some misconceptions that others have about Islam.
The 9/11 attack has absolutely NOTHING to do with jihad; in Islam, you can only attack another group of people IF they attack you first or if you're being oppressed. Terrorism, hence, has nothing to do with Islam or its teachings about Jihad.
So, yes, the Quran teaches its followers to perform jihad only and only for our personal betterment as well as that of our society's.
But if anyone thinks that Islam DOES teach Muslims to kill innocent people, I'm not gonna bother explaining how that's a silly misconception and a dumb lie painted on Islam; I've answered hundreds of questions here on y/a concerning Islam and terrorism, so you can go to the links below if you wish to understand what I mean.
Peace and blessings of God be upon you all.

Unfortunately the Koran, like the Bible, is a bit hazy in places. For example the Bible both states "an eye for an eye", yet also advises you to "forgive and turn the other cheek". The Koran is no less clear. Likewise the Koran urges Muslims to "rise up and slaughter the non-believers", whilst at the same time urging respect for "followers of the book" i.e. the Bible. Different Muslim clerics interpret the Koran to suit their own political, financial or religious ends.

Some say that Jihad, or Holy War, is the same teaching as
many societies teachings of the Warriors Way. The the battle is within the self. Overcoming ones own demons, like ego,
self-righteousness, lust, and fear. And when one defeats those demons, they can then live in peace with others.

All religious scriptures were written centuries ago--and all have passages that fanatics can distort to justify their desire for power and killing. But the Koran is no more "violent" than the Bible. Take a look at the Old Testament -- Joshua 8:24-26.

Yes, but not inthe context of physical confrontation and destruction. The Jihad spoken of in the Qua'ran pertains to a spiritual war against one's enemies, ergo, our lower nature as humans, or more specifically, our character defects-- those things in our make-up that keep us seperated from God

Yes, it teaches that Muslims should treat Kafirs (non-Muslims) with hatred. They don't follow Mohammed so therefore, they are unbelievers. Mohammed, himself, invaded many countries and took in many women as sex slaves. Islam became a dominant force in the Middle East. This quote from the Koran states dominion over non-Muslims.
YUSUFALL (009.029):Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.

No. Those that read it wrong, like anything that can be read wrong, has been taken in the wrong context.
Just the same way people take the Bible wrong and say it says something it doesn't.
It all stems from a lack of education and study on the topic and just repeating hear say that others told them or worse, a TV.
