Labs come in three colors: black, yellow and chocolate (there is no such variety as a Golden Lab -- that would be a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Labrador Retriever).
Here's an interesting tidbit about the Labrador Retriever: A litter of Lab puppies might have all three varieties (yellow, black and chocolate). It doesn't matter what color the dam and the sire are.

All labs are equal in intelligence. I'm a trainer and have found that the only difference between them is the desire of the owner to spend the need time in training the dog properly. Many larger dogs are prone to hip displasia and you can't tell until they are older if your dog has leanings toward this problem.
Labs come in Yellow, Black & Chocolate(Brown). If the Golden that you refer to in your question is actually a retriever then that breed has a higher rating on the intelligence chart coming in at number 4.

They are not called Golden Labs..they are yellow Labs and no there is no difference other then color. color is simply that just color.
Also don't be conned into "fox" red or white Labs..White is only pale yellow and the fox red is a form of either chocolate or yellow depending on the genetics involved. The colors are used by irresponsible breeders to con people into believing they have a "rare" color.
**** if you buy your puppy from a responsible breeder that health tests & breeds to standard a purebred is at NO MORE greater risk to health issues then a mix...it is so unfortunate that people still believe that old myth.******

there is absolutely no correlation between the intelligence of a dog and the color of his coat.
now if you're talking about a golden retriever as opposed to labrador retriever my opinion, backed up by many people smarter than me, is that the goldens have a higher degree of intelligence and a little bit better temperament. personally, i have labs and since adulthood always have b/c on a personal level i like labs more.
there is however a way to test a pup in a way to get one that suits your temperament. go to your local bookstore and pick up one of two books; "the art of raising a puppy" by the monks of new skete or "good owners/ great dogs" by brian killcommons. both have chapters on picking the puppy right for you, finding a good breeder and puppy testing (finding out the personality and temperment of the puppy in which you plan to buy as well if this puppy matches up to what you want in a dog. reputible breeders will know what this is and will encourage you do test their pups). additionally, these books will help you will basic and advance training which is very much recommended for labs especially as they are a handful.
good luck with your new pup; please spay/ neuter, get basic obedience for your dog, exercise, vet assistance and enjoy.

They are all equal...pick the one you are most drawn to. A female lab can produce puppies in any color depending on the color or the and/or color variances in both the mothers and fathers background. Any since females can be impregnated by multiple males at the same time it can get interesting.
Just remember that by choosing a pure bred animal you run a greater risk of health problem as well as breed and size sensitive physical deformities(such as hip displaysia). Also, Labs are fantastic dogs but there are hunting dog and do require a lot of exercise, they are very prone to becoming overweight so you have to keep them on a pretty strict diet. Labs are extremely intelligent and must be properly trained otherwise you can get a dog that is completely ill behaved.

There is no difference at all. They are all Labs. Yellow, chocolate, or black - all the same aside from color. Just choose which one you prefer. Personally, I like black the best.

I would say it is really up to which color you prefer. I have 2 labs and one is a chocolate and the other is fox red!! For me the choice was easy because I picked the one out of each liter that came right to me and was very friendly, playful and loving towards me and my two kids......

..don't pick your lab by color...pick your lab by personality... labs are mild tempered and very devoted companions. they need lots of exercise and love to fetch and carry things.they are very smart and quick to learn if you get one may sure not to tie them to a tree all day, they will become very depressed... they love water and will swim with you for hours...
