My son has more toys than any of us know what to do with. For his fourth birthday, I'd like to have an event rather than a tangible gift. I don't want to throw a big party, because I want it to be a family thing.

Local options include a children's museum, somewhat cheesy aquarium, a train ride, a waterfall, and various other outdoor activities. He would not enjoy Chuck E Cheese at all.

Can you recommend something that would be entertaining for a 4-year-old boy that he might actually remember when he gets older - something that would be a special event for all of us?

Go to a pottery/craft type place, and let him make his own cereal bowl or dinner plate. We do this every couple of years with the kids, and they love it!

How about a "first"...first time bowling, movie theater, one of those restaurants like HuHot where they watch their food being made...

Books are tangible, but so very important, as are photo albums and such. If you give him money, go start a bank account with him if you haven't already.

Your son will remember and appreciate the "cheesy" aquarium and seeing the waterfall, and third on the list- visiting children's museum. What I'm saying is, choosing interesting ideas like you have sounds good and memorable. I know this because I can easily get into a preschoolers head. Choose the exibit and water activities! Good choices!

Have a barbeque or other party for your family and some friends, and rent one of those "bouncy houses" and maybe hire a childrens' entertainer - maybe not a clown, but there's magicians and balloon artists and others out there.

OR - is there a tourist attraction nearby? I still remember the first time we went to the Empire State Building. (And they say, half the fun is getting there! Get a "party bus" or a limo or something or "rent" a friend with a minivan or SUV to be your driver for the day.)

My son (who just turned 4) recently had a birthday party/event where he had a tour of the local fire station. He got to sit in the fire truck, see the firemen go out on a call, see all the equipment that they put on, the whole works. He reminds us of it every time we go past the fire station. A best part of it all is that it was free. I agree with the previous answer in regards to pictures to help him remember it all.

My 3 year old still talks about the train ride we took last year. You could make a day of it, bring his favorite foods, books, games. Check out train books and movies from the library before the big day to make it more exciting. Maybe bring a best friend?

Lessons, like swimming or karate. He will love the attention that having a talent like that will earn him, from others. And it will be something special that just you and he can go to,and talk about.
Remember that without pics and lots of "do you remember?" He will not remember it at all. He probably wont anyway.
