The enigine blew in my 1996 Buick Regal and I was wondering if I could replace the blown 3800 series ll engine with a 3800 (not series ll) out of a 1991 Buick Park Ave. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for all the answers, but i prob. need to add that I was given this replacement motor by a friend and I can't afford another car. I've only had this one for a couple of weeks... yeah... go figure there
When I bought it , It had a leak in the radiator that the seller didn't tell me about, and I'm (apparently) not very car smart. Anyway I was just fixing to get the leak fixed when my son took it without my permission and ran it hot until well you get the pic.... he's only 14 yrs.old and now grounded for life. So I can't "buy" a newer car.... I have to get this one fixed somehow so I can get some of my money's worth out of it. Thanks again all.

You should be able to but why would you want to mess with that? Your car is going on 12 years old! Just buy another car!

I'm pretty sure youll need to switch ECU's, and i highly doubt that they kept the same wiring harness for each series, and im not sure but i think the 3800 II has a dogbone motor mount on top of the motor like the 3.1's and 2.8's.. probably best to buy a new car if you cant find another series 2 to drop in. good luck

hello, hope I can help, Frist of all the block will fit and bolt up but the Intake and front cover on the engine are different. The amount of labour the swap all the parts over would out way the cust of a 3800II right from the wrecker! I bought one last week for about $600 !

With a few minor adjusments by a mechanic i dont see why not . I put a motor in my 86 Firebird that was for a standard car and this one was an automatic. I just had to change the crank in it and readjust a few things !

Your best bet is to have it looked at by a shop that employs ase certified technicians. They can pinpoint the problem and save you money throwing parts at it hoping for an inexpensive fix. The tune up you did proves my point, have it checked by a pro, good luck.

bbefore you start, get axcess to a cross reference book, and see just how compatable the engine swap may be.
It is amazing, just how different things are, between years
