I have heard that broccoli will "scream" or "cry" when cut - that is makes a sound when it is freshly cut. Is this true, and if so, how does this happen?? Thanks for your answers!

And yes..I do know that broccoli can not literally "scream" or "cry"...I am assuming that it makes some sort of sound due to expelling gases, etc, when cut! LOL Thanks! :)

It's actually celery, and no...it has no vocal cords, therefore it doesn't scream. It's the Alpha sound waves that it emits when the knife cuts the thready parts. A microphone can pick the sound, but the human ear can't hear it on it's own.

As a member of the "Save the Broccoli" movement, I have to say it is cruel that you would cut up an innocent broccoli and eat it for your own personal enjoyment. (actually, I love it too and I have never heard it scream)
