Labs in general are pretty smart. They are characterized as "work dogs". this just means that they are happiest when they are doing an activity, like chasing a ball. I had a black lab who would go into our creek and extract every rock-even the large ones, with his mouth and stack them on the bank in a neat pile. This type of behavior is not rare in labs. This is their "work". They like doing a job. It can involved piling things, like sticks and such, or digging holes. this is not just a funny thing they do, but part of their instincts. enjoy your neat and smart dog-encourage them by playing at "work" with them!

They are well bred. Not all yellow labs are smart, but they are generally smart natured. Most of it has to do with their upbringing/training and that they are usually very cooperative and easy to train.

Good breeding helps but Its all in the training. Has nothing to do with the color of the Lab.
