You get sent round all sorts of places and when you think you have it, it then asks for money. Someone said there is no such thing as a free lunch, I think the same goes for software

There is a difference between freeware, adware, demo and shareware, so make sure you check the actual license.

There's a lot of good software at www.sourceforge.net. All of it is open source so they don't charge for it.
So it really depends on what you're looking for. The more complicated the system the more likely you'll have to pay for it.

Not even close to being true. there are tons of great free software/open source programs out there. Some may ASK for donations but that is always VOLUNTARY. A few good places to get free software cds are http://www.ttcsweb.org/osswin-cd/#download

Apache web server
mySQL database
Perl
And many other open source productivity tools.

As far as I'm concerned CNet.com has the best downloads. Some are free, some are 30 trials, and some cost a small fee.
What's nice with CNet is that they tell you up front if there is any cost.
