Just ask one, he'll tell you he's the best. You have to go into shops and look at portfolios.

well i am only 15 so it is not even legal to get a tattoo for me lol.
but i do want one. so what i would do is go to all the tattoo places that are close to you and see if you can look at some of the tattoo artist work, like some people have books of what tatts that they have done in the past. so then you can find the best tattoo artist for you.

Collectors are always happy to tell you where they have had their work done . They will also be very up-front about where they had or good or bad experience over-all.
When you know what you want, then you research individual artisits. Do you want fine-line ? black and grey ? japanese? graffiti art? Old skool? New skool ? are you looking for custom work , or are you using flash art? ...every shop has their go-to guy or gal for the specifics you're looking for . Take the time to compare portfolios . Look at online galleries . Skin art is permanent , and you don't want to rush in to making the decision hastily .
There is good tattoo , and there is bad tatoo. Too many people are cursed with bad ink because they didn't research first . Take the time...and get the ink you will be proud of .
Good luck.

The thing is this....different tattoo artists specialize in different types of tattoos. There isn't necessarily one that is "the best"...you want a ace at one thing...not a jack of all trades. I would ask individuals where they got their tattoos if you liked them and if you have time...drop by several tattoo studios and take a look at their work.

talk to other tattooed people in your area. chances are, if an artist has a good rep. you'll find out that way. if you can't do that, just check out local shops. and see who's really got the good stuff.

I found my artist by asking people I'd see in restaurants, stores, gas stations, where they got their art (if I liked it, that is). People who spend the time and money to get tattoos in obvious places don't usually mind answering the question.

I am from NC, but I asked around...people with ink are always happy to let you in on their tattoo artist. Find some people with hot tatts and ask them where they got them and who did them. I did that and my tattoo turned out beautiful!!!
