Lent is a man made tradition that is not found in the Bible. Neither is not eating meat on a certain day found in the Bible. Instead we have passages like these.

Colossians 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. 9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. 10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: 11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: 12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; 14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; 15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it. 16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: 17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

I usually gave up some sort of unhealthy food group like... really fatty foods or really sugary deserts or potato chips.

My parents observed Lent so of course I had to as well... which really irritated me since pepperoni is my favoriate pizza topping and Fridays were always pizza day at my house.

I got ashes on Ash Wednesday. I hated getting up before school to go to the "special" mass, though.

I observe lent. I begins this coming Wednesday. We aren't supposed to eat meat the first wedneday, and all the following Fridays, not sure what I'll give up yet.

actually the no meat on Friday thing comes from the northern European pagan tradition of butchering most of the cattle in the fall(they didn't have enough hay to feed them all winter). and towards the end of winter they often didn't have enough meat to last until spring, so they often had no meat at all, not just on Fridays.

i do observe lent. I'll also be giving up ashes. You're supposed to give up something you really enjoy. I don't know what I'm going to give up yet. Probably pizza lol

I find it hard to believe it is so hard for some Catholics to observe lent, but at the same time find it hard to believe why no meat on Friday is so hard as well... After all Jesus gave his life for us, asking you to not eat meat on Friday is really that hard?

I appreciate the calendar and its symbolism but don't always choose to participate. I really should do it and do it as an act of worship.

What a silly custom. I used to have to do this when I was a kid and my mom made me. I thought it was dumb then, and now that I realize that god is fictional, I think it's totally ridiculous now.
