I have a William, Michael and a Matthew, very normal. I know what you mean, my kids have some children in their classes with so weird names.

As my name is Jonquil Aura Is A Belle Llibre Garrick and my sister is Anthea Veracity (really, I'm not kidding!), I really feel for some of the kids today and their teachers/future bosses or colleagues. I think the drugs must have been good in the early seventies...My unique name can be wonderful and memorable now, but I went through YEARS of people thinking I was male, or stuttering through my name at the beginning of the school year, or not picking me at events because they could not pronounce my name...I also had a Lucanor, a Gideon, a Sasha, a Sunshine, a Spice Eden Maybee, a Morning Glory and about 17 Jillians, Jennifers, and Jasons in my classes growing up...the seventies were crazy times for naming babies...vive la difference!

My daughter is a special gift to me. I knew I wasn't going to name her anything on the last 10 year's top 100 lists, because I knew she would be unlike any of those kids, and therefore unlike any of those common and over-used names.
Furthermore, I hated that as a child, there were 3 Michaels in my class, 4 Amandas in my grade, and 20 or so Christopher's. Why couldn't those parents use an ounce of imagination?

Because people fail to remember what it was like to be in school, where everything and anything was subject to ridicule. It still is; naming kids a goofy name, or a very badly spelled name (Like the NBA's Anfernee Hardaway, poor guy called himself 'Penny') is selfish, and cruel.
I just had triplets, and traditional sensible names were the only way I'd go"

Your child's name should not be a reflection of YOUR misplaced ego

What's "normal" to you might be completely odd to someone else....it's all perspective. My last little girl we named Annabelle and some people find it cute and others think it's a hillbilly name so it's really preference I think. That being said there are people in need of some naming education for sure like those who name their kids names like Velveeta(the greasy cheese product) or Corvette or something like that. People should ask themselves if they'd go to Dr Velvetta Johnson or have a lawyer named Corvette Blume....chances are they'd pick someone else.

People like to be unique and fancy the child is unique and a name should reflect as such. I do like more traditional names myself and although I think unusual names are unfortunate I have an unusal name but since I learned why that is my name I'm very proud.

I think it's funny when people pick a normal name and spell it as crazy as they can possibly come up with, just to try to be different. And then the poor kid goes through life with no one able to pronounce his name right.

people cant pick normal names anymore, because all the normal names were taken that they like. We liked Sara, or catie for my daughter, but my husband has cousins named thoes names, so I let him pick, my Daughters name is Aliya, it's a normal name, just spelled different that Aahliya, or Ahliyah, it's short and sweet.

they'll become "normal" after tons of people think they're being unique and use the same name!
i have an "uncommon" name, esp for a girl, but as i've gotten older i've noticed it's getting to be a "normal" girl's name.
or maybe they think like Frank Zappa- that it'll build character! (his kids: Moon Unit, Dweezil Ian Donald Calvin Euclid, Ahmet Emuukha Rodan, Diva Muffin) i think they're fun!

Because each name has a meaning for people. Maybe to be different maybe a mixture of names to find one. There all different reasons why. Who are you to judge what is normal and not?
