Is there a rule or something I should follow on this? Plastic isn't very good for you, and over time, the water in the bottle will probably become bad, but I'm just wondering, how many times should be able to fill up a water bottle before you should go and refill it?

...and if you guessed, I am a college student.

As many times as you like. The idea that this plastic is dangerous is an urban myth. It's completely inert. The only danger is bacteria may build up around the mouth of the bottle unless it's properly washed. I refer you to this article.

For thin bottles (bottled water, pop bottles), I usually only refill them less than 5 times before tossing them in the recycle box.

Thicker bottles (Vitamin Water, 1.5 L bottled water) tend to last longer, in my experience. I rinse them out after each use, and every 2-4 times I rinse them with dishwasher soap and really hot water.

I use these bottles for my work lunch, mostly for Gatorade and juice. I've never used them for milk - the plastic gives it a weird taste, and a small thermos provides better insurance against temperature changes.

Zero. Those bottles are meant for one time use only. When you fill it up, a coating wears off into the water that is bad for you. If you want to refill something, get one of those Nalgene bottles specifically made for repeated use.

I read somewhere, never reuse a plastic water bottle (such as a sport bottle) unless you thoroughly wash it and let it dry first. I don't know why, I forgot what the article said. But you have to do this each time you've emptied it. Keep a few on hand and after you've washed and let them dry, you will always have one you can use.

754 times for fill up or you can keep it for 4 days, which ever comes first.
