It's not really true. There've been a lot of different polls about this sort of thing. The most unwelcome tourists are actually French, according to a European poll.
What you're seeing is that it's easy to pick on the top dog. We're the biggest, baddest, most powerful nation on Earth, so we're a big target. There are also the folks who just hate everything and everyone bigger than they are.
If you want to know how bad people think we are look at the following:
The spread of American culture across the globe. IF everyone hates us, they sure want to be LIKE us.
The lines of folks waiting to immigrate to the United States. IF everyone hates us, they sure want to LIVE here and BE one of us.
That'll tell you everything you need to know about how popular we are.

There are so many people on this site who keep slagging off the Americans, and those that are doing it have never been to the States or met an American. As for what people say about America helping other Countries to develop more only for what they can get from these countries in return such as Military bases etc. didn't the British do exactly the same thing to expand the British Empire. The critics on here don't mention that.

I like Americans and have been there I found them much more friendly and welcoming than us British,I do though think that their knowledge of the rest of the world is very limited and when you say about aid it is a typical example.People starve in third world countries because of the USA who lend them money on the agreement that anything they grow can only be sold at lower prices than the USA so they cant compete and money cannot be used for free health care or education which would improve life to such an extent they may compete with america. But as you say when these countries starve america gets plenty of footage of rice and grain being unloaded with large US labels showing. We British are on the gravy train with you and I cant understand why we should not like you but the rest of the world I think I can see their point .

I am from Jamaica and I have one documentary for you since you bring up aid:
"Life and Debt" - watch that and then you will understand why someone would have an issue with America and its policies
My first experience in the US was handing in a research paper in my first semester of college about American Foreign Policy in Latin America and the Caribbean in the 20th Century and having it thrown back in my face by the teacher when all I did was summarize. She said if I hated America so much I shouldn't be here and I need to change what I wrote!! Even though I only quoted the books available in the library right there! Too many americans have that attitude.
As said before it is not the people, it is the foreign policy - but most Americans don't even pay attention to anything outside their country. They are so comfortable in their own World of believing that the UN is spineless, they live in the greatest country in the World, they can do no evil and they are always right.
Giving aid is no reason to like you because you have so many strings attached to that aid and in truth we get WAY more loans than aid.
Funny enough, the IMF (International Monetary Fund for those Americans who don't pay attention to such things) has come under criticism many times for its policies and my country is one of many examples of failed policy directives our own Prime Minister opposed but were forced on us.

i dont think the americans are bad .they have the same values as us.i would not like the job that leader's do, because no matter what you decided it wont please every one and no dought they have some tough decision's to make, and some are the wrong one's as well. i served my country for a long time and would do so agen gladly ,i was in gulf 1 as well as other places and wither it was right or wrong ,that was not my decision to make. but it was my duty and job to do my best.and i am sure that the same apply's to p.m's and president's.war on these terrorist's Will not end any time soon look at northern Ireland as an example.
but one thing for shure, is that our resolve is greater than there cause.as for humanitarian aid i was in bosnia 94-95 providing protection to aid convoy's for the u.n and u.n.h.c.r. and we were not alway's greeted with open arm's.there will alway's be some people never happy regardless the out come. this might not be the answer you are looking for and long winded it may be its the
way i see it
all the best dude

You seem to have some deluded idea that the rest of the world should do as you say , you have caused war all over the world . You have backed every despot dictator in your history , only to further you own gains , without regard for the Peoples of the country involved . You have been at war for the last fifty years or so , with anyone who does not submit to your way of life . The sooner the good People of America rise up against your whole way of life , and I pray it is soon before more have to die , you will forever be sheep .
See you at the G8 .

It is not America that is bad its your government who cause all the problems. They feel they have a right to tell other countries about what weapons are permitted...the US should set an example before telling India,Pakistan or Korea what they can or can not have. Did you know if the US cut their Military budget by half they would be giving you back 5 bucks in every 100. The US spend over a Trillion Dollars on weapons alone...think about it. Why does the US have an Agency that helps the bad guys as well as the good. The CIA which was run by GW Bush's father.

Hi Ashley,
Good question and i am going to ignore th lame, uninformed partisan answers because they ANNOY me! I figure most of them don't support themselves or have a life so they spout endlessly.
Because of the US economic positon, technology, military superiority and out stance upon human rights and democracy we have been voted in abstencia WORLD POLICE.
We are dealing with a bunch of third world countries that are like teenagers given a curfew, limit to cell minutes and told that they can't get a piercing, flash their thong, get dunk at the prom and have to maintain a "B" average.
These countries do NOT like us for the same reason that teenagers are PISSED at their parents 90% of the time until they need MONEY for something; on a global scale it's foreign aid.
The PROBLEM with our elected officials is that there is NO SPECIFIC training required before they start making BIG decisions on our behalf. It is simply like being voted Prom Queen; a HUGE popularity contest and he/she with the most pictures, money and friends WINS. It just has NOTHING to do with capability, but the ability to form a TEAM that covers one's personal shortcomings. Some are good at it and some SUCK!
The bottom line is that the US has been put in a BAD position to solve the world's problems and many of the SMALL leaders just don't like being told what to do; see Chavez and the rest of them. They look for their 5 minutes in the world spotlight and the US steps in to keep them from MURDERING those that disagree.
Look at the history of the US Wars; the vast majority have been over HUMAN RIGHTS and DEMOCRACY and I really don't think that is all bad.
A large percentage of the US citizens are either ignorant, scared, self-serving (DRAFT) and just do NOT see the BIG PICTURE.
I could go on and on but won't. You are an intelligent young woman and are capable of indepedant thought; research and answer your own question. Just make something happen for the RIGHT REASONS.

Brits. are brought up to think of the USA as very materialistic and too quick to use military force, where we could handle it with political negotiation and more appreciation of other cultures. Personally I enjoyed visiting the USA and found people to be very polite and hospitable. I think Bush is really causing some anti American feeling in Europe though. Many folk her hope for a democrat next time.

Well I like you yanks ,I have always found you to be kind helpfull & friendly. My mum &dad were just children during WW2 and I grew up hearing stories of how kind your G I s were to the people over here.Your country helped us & fought alongside us against Nazi Germany & Japan & helped defend western europe against communist aggretion for over 50 years.I'm glad we are good friends.Trust me the vast majority of British people like you its just that the ones that dont are very vocal about it.
We are two quite different cultures united in a common language but we do share many of the same values & ideals.I think our countrys are like two best friends who would do anything for each other but couldnt live in the same house together as the small differences between them & the way each of them did things would wind the other up & niggle them.
Generaly I think the U.S should learn from its WW2 G.I s & win the hearts & minds of other nations in the same way as the G.I. s in WW2 won my parents hearts & minds which has passed down the generations to me .One of your past Presidents once said carry a big stick & walk or talk softly in other nations eyes all the U.S is doing is waving a big stick & your country gives the impression of being a bully to them.Anyway Ive been to the U.S many times & I like it - your speed limit is too low though-cant see the point of having cars with such large engines with such a low speed limit -it doesnt make any sensce.

I think it may have something to do with the controlling,gung-ho dogmatic, arrogant, attitude that some Americans have that other countries (foreigners) find sickening (hit first ask questions later attitude) this is not to say that all Americans have this attitude. tip watch M*A*S*H* a bit out of date maybe but that can only be worse when so much morality has been lost over the decades.
P.S. if only more would bother to care and ask the question. UK media is not censored to the same degree as US
