It depends on what picture of piece of art, you have to go to which ever one speeks to you the most.

Though I find photography fascinating as an art in exhibitions since it captures reality in milliseconds, we are bombarded with so much of it through the media that I prefer something less transitory or formalised around me. We started getting interested in real paintings for ourselves, not only because they conveyed the spirit of a representation, but also the particular technique and style of an artist. We still have that first painting which we bought thirty years ago when we had very little money. Even though it was sheer madness at the time, it has given us so much pleasure over the years that we have never regretted the scrimping and saving that resulted. We keep an eye on up and coming young painters through a few established art galleries, go to the "affordable art fair" and have treated ourselves to a few more since. We have made mistakes as some paintings which look good on an exhibition wall may not click in one's interior, and we have had to downgrade them to less prominent spots, but those that are in obvious places around us have not become "wallpaper": we look at them and have continued following the evolution of the artists that painted them with interest. It has added another dimension to our humdrum existence.

It depends which walls, in my sitting room I prefer paintings, mostly by local artists and landscapes, but in my office (the spare room I like to call office) I prefer photos. It's all a matter of personal taste.

It depends on the kind of rooms. Not all pictures suit all rooms.
