All the people I know that are mormon have one wife. A long time ago, in the beginning of our church, we were. But we're not now.

Thinking that ALL Mormons are polygamists is wrong. But it isn't incorrect to think that some are. There is in fact still alot of them thru out Utah and other states. I just last week saw a documentary about some present day polygamists.

Unfortunately, the actions of a few are attributed to the many. Just look at the news papers regarding polygamists in the Utah and surrounding areas. Every now and then someone decides that they are above the law (state and church) regarding the number of wives.

So just go back to your ward, focus on the positives, and whenever someone says something that upsets you, remember that they have been saying thing like that since Joseph Smith found the Book of Mormon.

You are not responsible for others, just yourself. When you old enough to go on a mission, you will learn much more. No matter what, go with what you know is true.

Because the crazy poligomists who live out in the desert are Mormans too, no matter what you're church says. People often think of the fundies before the regular people when thinking of a religion.

* You said it when you said in the beginning you were. It is in Mormon doctrine to have more than one wife. I understand the church changed their polisy on multiple wives in order to gain statehood for Utah. there are still a few hard core Mormons who defy the law and the main Mormon leaders. I saw a program called the outsiders last week about a town in Arizona that al men have more then one wife and teach the children to do so and even the teenage girls are indoctrinated to accept the fact their husband will have multiple wives.

This is a renegade church and town, but it is Mormon and one reason people believe all Mormons believe this.*

I hope everyone reads this. Yes, I am Mormon, born and raised. Here is the absolute facts about Mormons and polygamy (if you do not believe me, look up your local missionaries):

Anyone who is a polygamist and claims to be Mormon is mistaken. Any member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints who is found to be practicing polygamy is excommunicated. That means their names are taken off of the Church's record system, and they are no longer members of the LDS church.

So, it is impossible to be a Mormon and a polygamist. This is not simply because the early members wanted statehood for Utah. As the cliche goes, it's complicated...(though if you want further explanation, feel free to ask me).

We, the members of the LDS church, believe the family to be the most important and sacred organization...ever.

Any questions? Just call me the Dispeller of Mormon Misconceptions.

P.S. I don't want to fight anyone.

Thanks for this question. I have had Mormon missionaries to my house so that I could hear what they believed "frm the horse's mouth" but I never had enough nerve to ask about the polygamy thing. Sadly, the polygamist rednecks in Utah with 400 wives all of whom are on welfare adn half of whom are 13 is all that the media shows of Mormonism. No one sees the strong belief in family and community. I am not Mormon or even Christian but I do wish that more people knew about the wonderful focus on the family.

Not all Muslims are Radical Jihadists but the ones that are draw a lot of media attention and therefore a lot of misunderstanding from people who don't know much about Islam.
It's the same with mormons. Poligamy is odd to most people and therefore when someone says "Mormon" the first thought on everyone's mind is "Polygamy"
It's the curse of too much media and not enough education about different religions and cultures.

Wilford Woodruff said that it would "seem prudent that it would stop for a time". That means that the doctrine is on the books and ready to be brought back at any moment. It is one that has not been repudiated.
If you want to be honest about the teachings of the LDS church, the FLDS church has stayed true to the teachings of Joseph Smith.
Don't get me wrong - I am not an LDS or FLDS. Neither Joseph Smith nor Warren Jeffs are true prophets of God.

Some sects of Mormonism practice polygamy to this day, although the mainstream church does not do so. There are several references to monogamy in the BoM, but I haven't yet finished reading it, so cannot say what later chapters of the book (which I consider to be worthless drivel) may say about the subject. But J. Smith apparently did not practice what he preached -- he was lynched because he was debauching every female in town.

I think there are so many "off shoots" of the LDS church, that it's easier for them to just assume that, rather than asking or doing a little research.
They would learn that while the LDS don't practice it right now , they do believe that polygamy is sometime they will have in the next life.
