I recently took in a homeless female cat. I've had cats before but this is my first female. her symptoms of constant meowing, rubbing on the carpet and lifting her hind end all point to her wanting to mate. I was just wondering how long and how often this normally lasts? It was a sigh of releif knowing her calls were just to find a mate and not of any sort of pain but none the less it can wear on you. thanks.

A female, once sexually mature, will go into heat (also known as estrus). Cats are seasonally polyestrous which means they will go into heat multiple times a season until they mate. Season usually starts a few months after winter solstice and usually ends in September or October. Indoor cats who are only exposed to artificial lighting may stay in season year round! Estrus itself will last 4 - 10 days and will cycle (about every 2 to 3 weeks) until the female mates, is spayed, or goes out of season

. Unfortunately, once a female cat goes into heat, she will do so again and again (as often as every two weeks) until she is either: a) pregnant or b) spayed. It *is* extremely uncomfortable for her and will get worse rather than better. Your veterinarian may be able to give her shots to make her more comfortable. At one time, they gave male hormones for this purpose, but I think that practice has been discontinued.
Female cats in heat will go to any lengths to get outside and mate. I've also heard of toms tearing the screens off windows to get to them.

As for bleeding, you'll rarely if ever see any blood from a female cat in heat, but you might want to confine her to a room away from the main door to help keep her confined indoors.

I Wish I could be more help, but in my opinion, spaying is the only sensible answer, particularly since you seem to have made a long-term commitment to this cat.

A female cat can stay in heat for to 2-3 weeks but if I were you and I was out of town ask the person who looked after them if she went out? she might be over it but she could be pregnant if she went outside as the males always smell a female in heat. Go to your vet if you think she might be. Hope this helps? Luv, Diana

·PROESTRUS 1-4 days
The queen displays an increase in vocalization, but will not accept a male. No apparent discharge.

·OESTRUS 5-8 days
The queen will want to go out for long periods of time. The queen is ready for mating and arches her back ‘lordosis,’ she will move her tail to one side and roll around as if in agony and will accept a male.

·INTER-OESTRUS 10-14 days
If no mating has taken place, no ovulation occurs; there will be a short period of sexual inactivity before the next cycle of ‘proestrus’ occurs.
OR

·METOESTRUS 10-14 days
This occurs if the queen has been mated and pregnancy occurs, or if artificial stimulation was used to induce ovulation.
OR

·ANOESTRUS 10-14 days
This is the normal period where no sexual activity takes place. (Usually during winter Sept-March.)

Around 4 to 6 days and happens about every 2 1/2 to 3 weeks. I would get her spayed ASAP.

Basically... until she finds a way to get out and get pregnant. It may subside for a day or two, but she'll just go right back into heat. Best thing is to get her fixed ASAP (and certainly dont' let her outside until you do!). There's soooo many homeless cats out there.. please don't make any more. If you can't afford it, there are places that can help. Call your local shelter and they should be able to direct you to low-cost options in your area.

Instead of waiting for answers on this question act like a responsible owner and just bring her to the vet asap and get her spayed! Poor Kitty!

Cats go into heat for a week (7 days) ,every 3 weeks.
Expect your cat to go into heat about once a month, depending when her last period of heat was.
