I would like to say that both my mother and stepfather went to church 3 times a week. Neither drank, smoked, or cussed that I ever knew.
Yet they both were so abusive parents that they would be in jail today if it was going on now in this day and time.
I did turn from religion until I matured and realized that had they not been going to church, my and my brothers' life would have been much worse than it was, bad as it was. Their religion did restrain them from doing things that other bad parents have done.
I am a Christian today in spite of my parents not because of them.

No, not at all. My parents didn't raise us with any kind of religious instruction, until the mid-70s. Then, they had some Jehovah's Witness guy teach us bible study every Sunday for about a year. It didn't take, as I was born-again in 1980, completely rejecting JW theology.

No. I came to know Jesus when I was in high school. My parents did not encourage or discourage any type of religion, but the person who told me about Jesus said that if you accept Him as your Lord and Savior He will come and abide in me. I thought to myself, this God will actually interact with me? When I was in high school I thought that when you died you returned to dirt and there was eternal darkness. Life ceased to exist but you wouldn't know it because you were dead. I figured if this God is real than He will show Him self to me. If He was not real than I could always return to the lifestyle I was living. Jesus is still my Lord. That is a good question by the way. Take care.

it was until I was about 17 and started realizing I dont have to think that way. My parents are catholic, very catholic. I went to camp every sumer with nuns for 4 weeks across the country plus a ton of wierd things to learn the religion. I disagreed with a lot of things that I was taught so I decided not to practice it anymore.

Not really. I use to be a christian to try and impress my father but I quickly got over that.
My mother never told me what religion she was so I always assumed she was an atheist because she never prayed or went to church or anything like that.
I am an atheist. My father doesn't like it too much, and my mom doesn't care. She and I never talk about religion.

Nope. I have studied other religions and I decided I loved my religion the best and stuck with it because it felt right. People who are influenced by their parents ideals and beliefs without really looking out and researching for themselves are ignorant fools.

It is a good bet (although not a certain one) that a randomly chosen person's religion is the same as that of his parents. My parents were nominally Christian, but it did not take me long to figure out that the biblical tales were nonsense -- I was eight years old.

No. My parents have never held the same faith as each other, and I do not hold the faith of either of my parents. My religion is influenced mostly by my own ability to reason.

Of course, they have a huge part in shaping every part of us. Of course if you don't have a good relationship with your parents, then other people you meet in life and connect with can have a stronger influence on you. If you have a great relationship with your parents, then even if you fall off track you will eventually find your way back when you mature.

Sure but not always in the way one would like. Being exposed to my parent's religion gave me all the reasons why I wanted to leave it behind.
