According to Wikipedia:

Cats learn by trial and error, observation and imitation. Cats' learning abilities are aided by their good memory. Researchers Norman Maier and Theodore C. Schneirla reportedly found cats to have long-term spatial recall of at least 16 hours, as compared to no more than five minutes in dogs. In terms of working memory, dogs greatly outperformed cats. In another study, it was found that cats possess visual memory ability comparable to that of monkeys.

[edit] Intelligence by Breed
Cats, like people, have short-term and long-term memory functions. Having short and long term memory is the reason cats can remember where the litter box is when it has just been moved it (short-term memory) but can also remember things learned years before, like what the litter box is for (long-term memory).

How long can you remember?
They remember things as long as we do. They are not stupid creatures that survive on nothing but instinct. They think, plan, remember, dream, love, and everthing! Don't sell your cat short. They are far more intelligent than you give them credit for. I have watched mine stare at something and inside I can almost hear the wheels turning, pretty soon he is off and doing something naughty! He is smart enough to work out his plan of attack ahead of time. He is even figuring the time it will take me to reach him to give him a spanking if he needs it. Because he will stop and run only when I am close enough! I have even heard my cat do the "tarzan yell" while flying through the air at the curtains! And then swing long enough to give herself just enough time to jump and get away just before I could reach her!
Trust me, they are smart and they remember plenty for a long time!

First of all, fish have about a 3-month memory! They are much more intelligent than people give them credit! Check this link - http://nootropics.com/intelligence/smartfish.html (I love my smart fish!)

Ok - Cats are the smartest of all pets! Really. They can remember something new for 16 hours and are able to learn more than monkeys and dogs! Also, once they learn something, they can remember that learned behavior or information FOREVER! Cool, huh? http://www.catsinternational.org/articles/training/the_intelligent_cat.html

cats have absolutly fabulous memory and are considered the next smartest animal under primates and up to 200 times more retentative then a dogs. Researchers Norman Maier and Theodore C. Schneirla reportedly found cats to have long-term spatial recall of at least 16 hours, In another study, it was found that cats possess visual memory ability comparable to that of monkeys

Normal every day evidence of this is they rememebr where home is, the sound of your voice, what time breakfast is at, and their name.

Other proof of this is how they can be trained where not to scratch, tp turn on the faucet in a sink, and even some have been taught to pee in the toilet.

One elderly man taught his cat to dial 911 at his command, and it saved his life when eh fell one day.

Cats also, like himans learn by trial and error, observation and imitation. have you ever seen a kitten hanging from a door handle? Thats because they saw you pen the door that way.

they can remember as long as it suits them, or as long as it keeps you cringing for something you did wrong.
they have fairly decent memories.
i work at a cattery, and sometimes their owners fo away for months on end, and after their stay with us, they go home, and go on where they left off.
they prefer the same food, same spot to sleep, same place to hunt mice, etc.
they pretty good with that.
