They say we need a test that cost a thousand dollars to find what he is alergic to. I cant afford that, he scratches constantly and loses his hair. Its not mange. The only things that have helped are steroid shots and antibiotics. The antibiotics will only work untill he becomes immune to them and the steroids will also eventually kill him. If anyone has any answers please share them.

First of all my dog got allergy tested and it did not cost over 200 dollars. Maybe you should find a different vet. You could try Gold Balm. It is a white powder that you spread on your dogs infected areas. You buy this at the drug store and it is in a Gold container. I would highly recommend getting your dog a new vet and getting him tested. They will give you shots that you give your dog every month that helps with those allergies. My dog is allergic to human dander! So nomatter what you do your dog may be allergic to you and he will never get over it without a shot. Hope this helps!

The first poster's right that antibiotics don't fix allergies, just infections. Maybe the dog's getting an infection from the scratching??

My dog is allergic to... I'm not sure what. The vet told us to give him Benadryl. She said it could make him sleepy, but it doesn't. He's fine. We give him 4 a day but only when his ears or eyes get red. He's a large dog, though- a lab. It's not a natural remedy but it is an at home thing and a lot cheaper than allergy testing.

THe only remedy would be able to remove what he is allergic to.

Unfortunatly that means allergy testing, and that is the price you pay for having a dog.

Try to work out a payment plan with your vet

Edit: I just reread your question and something doesn't make sense. Antibiotics should not work on an allergy, only an infection. A vet should not be giving them out for an allergy. Before you commit to anything i would get a 2nd opinion.

You should try changing your dogs food. Often dogs are allergic to certain ingredients in dog food. Try "Hills" prescription diet. I think you can only get it from the vet so it won't be found in pet stores. Good luck finding a cure for your dog, I hope this helps you.
