Bassets are an excellent choice for young kids because they're so laid-back and easy going, very loving dogs who do well when they're part of the family. They like quite a bit of exercise and you need to be careful how you feed them because they tend to put on weight easily.
Also, since they're scent hounds, they really need to be obedience trained before you let them off leash because they just follow their nose and don't hear you calling them back. They also have some stubbornness in them but you can overcome that with training - they don't do well with harsh methods.

I grew up with bassets. They are very loving, loyal dogs and are great with children. They have very powerful noses though (2nd out of all dogs behind bloodhounds) and will follow a scent through ANYTHING. Therefore, you have to either have a fenced/invisible fenced yard or watch them like a hawk when they are outside. You also need to keep their ears very clean..b/c their ears are so long which makes the ear canal very dark and damp (perfect breeding ground for bacteria), they are prone to infections. And, like any hound, they can be stubborn; therefore, an obedience class is HIGHLY recommended.
I love bassets. I fostered one for a while until she was healthy enough to be adopted. They bond tightly with their human family. And many like to tell you a story with their hound voice! It's cute. I met a 19 year old basset 2 weeks ago at the dog park...
Good luck!

I love basset hounds! Mine died just a little over a year ago at the age of 12. She was a great dog, and basset hounds are a great breed!
They are always happy and love the company of people and children. My little sister grew up with our basset hound and they thought the world of each other! We never had any problems with biting, jumping, barking, etc. Ours loved long walks and had quite a bit of energy up until the end! They also love bread as a treat!
Bassets become overweight easily and are somewhat difficult to housebreak, but it's worth it to do it! They are best with a fenced in yard (or on a leash when outside) because their great nose gets them into trouble sometimes!
Oh yeah, they love other dogs and other pets as well! Mone got along with our other dogs, cats, and our goat and lamb!

They are good with children and are nice dogs. They need training but then all dogs do.
