I want to make a cup of coffee with half the caffeine ('half-caf'). I have a single cup coffee maker and usually make two cups with one regular coffee pod. If I make four cups using one regular and one decaf pod, and only drink half of it, will that really make two cups of half-caf coffee? (I'll know if you're wrong based on whether or not I can sleep tonight.) :)

You're thinking in the right direction. I have an ulcer. Nearly 40 years ago, a Doc told me to stop drinking caf coffee, it's POISON for me. He said "If you need it, drink de-caf". You know as well as I how bad de-caf tastes.

I use proportions that equal about 60% decaf, and haven't doubled over in pain yet. Just eyeball it, and fill your measuring device with about 50% of each grind. Enjoy!!!

Why not just make your regular 2 cups with 1 regular coffee pod and only drink 1 cup and that way you are not using 2 pods.

Decaf coffee usually has ~ 60% of the caffiene as regular coffee so your proposed method would not give you a clean 50/50 split. Your method would give you 40% of the caffiene of regular coffee.

It’s easy to make half caf at home. Just purchase two blends of your favorite coffee, one caffeinated and one decaf. Use a spoonful of each to brew a nice cup of half caf.

But remember...

"Half caf" is short for half caffeinated, referring to a cup of coffee with a 50/50 mix of decaf and regular coffee. Many people drink half caf because it reduces the amount of caffeine intake while still packing a punch. It also allows people to drink twice as many cups of coffee while getting close to the same amount of caffeine as half as many cups.
