It just seems a little on sided to single out tobacco when alcohol is responsible for just as many deaths in this country, either by the damage to the person taking it or the damage caused to others by the person taking it.

Forgot to say I live in England and the labelling I am referring to is saying it can kill in big bold letters, as it does with tobacco.

The industries "please drink responsibly" micro writing at the bottom of their ads doesn't quite do it. Alcohol kills far more people than the stats reveal. Chances are that the next body pulled from a river that you see in the paper is an alcoholic who saw no other choice. It can be very dangerous and is legal by virtue of it's age. I haven't touched it for 20 years and most of the people who I knew back then are dead. Even some who also stopped but it was too late.

There is some voluntary labelling already. Unfortunately, let us be honest I personally do not believe the tobacco labelling has stopped anyone from either starting or continuing to smoke.

I once had a lecture as a student from the head of the West of Scotland Health Education Department. Perhaps coincidentally soon afterwards he resigned. He told us he didn't believe health education worked. I think that was an extreme point of view, (particularly considering the job he was doing at the time!) but I guess we knew basically where he was coming from.

Why does the government need to add warning labels? Are we, as Americans, too stupid to understand that excessive amounts of alcohol can be damaging and dangerous? Any one with two brain cells to rub together can figure out that intentionally inhaling smoke is eventually going to do some damage.

At some point, we have to take responsibility for our actions.

They already do, but it is usually hard to see. The warning is for birth defects and impaired driving. I think that the the warning should be easily visible and have a more detailed warning, as with tobacco products. I also think that there should be a combined warning for both products, since using a combination of both magnifies the damage caused to the body.

Common sense says you are absolutely correct...but since when did common sense affect what politicians do????

I suppose there is one difference in that drinking in moderation is not harmful whereas any smoking is...you still make a good point though!
