We currently have wood single pane windows and I will never get wood again. I have heard that vinyl expands and contracts a lot so am thinking about fiberglass but do not know that much about them. Anyone know what is best?

Gottabuylots---- You have wood single pane windows, even if you upgrade to a wood double pane window with low E and Argon gas filled glass you would still have all the upkeep of wood, also wood windows do expand and contract. As far as Fiberglass replacement windows go you will find that they are newer on the market than Vinyl, Marvin and Anderson both make a Fiberglass framed window that are mixed with wood and then reinforced for strength, once again because they have wood mixed with fiberglass they will still expand and contract. Also, look at the warranty the Marvin and Anderson windows only have 10 yrs and do not include improper installation. As Far as Vinyl Replacement windows go, If the windows are made from recycled vinyl they are weaker, they may fade and also expand and contract. Look for Vinyl replacement windows that are made from Virgin Vinyl, have fusion welded corners for strength (these windows do not use metal reinforced frames - they are one of the strongest in the industry) also they do not expand and contract, look for a company with a warranty that not only covers the window but also the installation. There are only a handful of companies that manufacture and install there own windows and these companies have lifetime warranties for as long as you own the them. If you need specific information please feel free to email me, I can forward information on companies in your area no matter where in the US you are. DZign2006@yahoo.com

Vinyl is cheap. It doesn't work very well at all. Fiberglass is great and high-quality. Go with the fiberglass!

Vinyl windows do contract and expand alot; hence, they don't seal well generally. (There are some very good ones out there, but, as a rule.... )

Vinyl - as our construction guy said, "Vinyl is final." It is fabulous - ours are Milgard.
