And don't tell me it's because it'll make my life "so much better". That's not motivation enough for me. I may like living life according to another standard. It may suit my life just fine. I don't mind that you think it isn't good enough.

I've also been told by several people (Christian, in fact) that it's unecessary to even believe in God in order to be a good person, so obeying in order to be "a good person" isn't reason enough either.

Is there any reason I __NEED__ to obey the will of God, or is there nothing that makes it necessary?

Doug, I told you, the "it's better" position isn't persuasive. You may think it's better... it may BE better for you. But you don't know that it's better for me. I know if it is or isn't. Try agian.

The only "need" comes if you have any concern whatsoever for your eternal soul.

Believe as you wish. Reap what you sow.

I don't think it is a question of needing to obey the word of God, it is more of a question of what you want to believe in, and how you think that will work in your life.
If you are not spiritually comfortable with something, then usually that is not the best way to live your life, it is like living with a mask, where you can see everything and everyone, but no one will ever be able to see the real you.

I understand your feelings. A lot of people put words in God's mouth. There's a million religions, and they all say something different.

I believe that most of the metaphysical stuff is irrelevant. We have a mind, and we know if what we do is harmful to someone. How simple can you get!

God is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance (change of mind). If he's not willing that you perish, then it goes to say that He is willing that you come to repentance. So, in effect, if you obey the will of God, you won't perish. Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

'being good' is relative to who is setting the guidelines. I choose to 'do' what God will have me do instead of choosing to do 'good' by my standards...

you don't have to do anything... only God will reveal the need to change to do His will... but if you seek Him and want to know why you should follow Him... He will let you know... no person can or will ever satisfy you with a perfect answer... if you TRULY want to know... ask Him... if you truly don't want to know... then don't ask anyone... live by your own standards and be happy with your decision...

one analogy I've heard... more or less...

if you call a plumber or electrician, or you hire a lawyer, or any time you trust a choice in an expert opinion, because they know more about that topic than you.

well, what if you could have such a "consultant" that has absolute, infinite awareness of all that is, wouldn't it make sense to trust their guidance on just about anything and everything?

now this is not to say that you shouldn't think for yourself. you just have to balance it in a rational way and all.

If it is really the will of God, then why wouldn't you? That is the problem though, isn't it? How do you know what the will of God really is? How do you know it's coming from God?

You should only obey him because you desire to do so.

Otherwise, "Do what thou wilt" shall be 'the whole of your law' (-Alestair Crowley, Satanist from early 1900's)

let me give you the muslim standpoint on this one. god gave us free will. you have the choice. you do not NEED TO but it is better for you to do so. god gives you a brain. if you choose to believe then good for you. if you choose not to believe that is up to you. no one can make you do any thing. so in the end it is up to you. you do not NEED TO DO N E THING
