BRING A PHRASEBOOK-I recommend Lonely Planet's Italian. It will truly save your life. Their travel books are really worth it, too.

Also, be very careful about your personal belongings. If possible, wear pants that have pockets with buttons (and keep them closed). If you carry a bag, make sure the straps buckle, not snap, and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Don't let strange people (especially children) approach you. Say, "Vai via!" (It means "go away".)

Now that you've got a warning, have fun! Sleep little and walk a lot-there's so much to see. Visit the Vatican Museum & St. Peter's Basilica. Climb the cupola-it's really difficult and claustrophobic, but the view from the top is totally worth it.

Walk into churches. Be polite, and ask before you take pictures, but it's okay to go inside and look around respectfully. There are many hidden treasures in very unassuming locations.

East breakfast standing up-you will pay 10 times as much if you sit down for your cappucino and cornetto than if you stand at the counter like the locals. (Don't have a cappucino after 10 a.m. unless you want some funny looks.)

For lunch, have a slice of pizza on the go. It's cheap, and the pizza is fantastic. Then, you can use the money you saved to enjoy a really nice dinner with a bottle of local wine-ask for something from Frascati.

Do one or two day trips. Visit Ostia Antica or Tivoli. For an overnight trip, go to Florence (but skip Pisa). Pompeii is a nice day trip, but avoid central Naples-it's very dangerous if you're not a local.

For group or private touring, try www.vaticancitytours.com. It's worth it to have a guide for the Vatican Museum or in the countryside, so that you will appreciate what you're seeing. If money is no issue, get a private guide. You will get a lot more out of it, and have a more personalized experience. Otherwise, do a group tour. You might make some friends.

Some tips: - from the airports to the city don't take taxis, they are slow and expensive. If you land in Ciampino, take the shuttle to the subway station Anagnina and then the subway to the centre (1,20 euros + 1 euro); from Fiumicino, the regional train to Orte or Fara Sabina which stops at Ostiense, Trastevere and Tiburtina, in the center of Rome (5,50 euros). - besides Coliseum and Forum, visit the archaelogical site of Torre Argentina (in the centre, near Piazza Venezia) and the areas of Appia Antica and Ostia Antica, both far from the centre but very interesting and not so crowded. - visit many churches: they are wonderful and totally free. - to have dinner, the best quarter is Trastevere: it is a charming quarter, there are plenty of typical restaurants and pizzerias and it is relative cheap. - you dont need to buy water: mineral water sold near the most touristic places is very expensive. But in Rome there are many little fountains that give a lot of excellent fresh water totally free. You can go around with a plastic bottle and fill it at these fountains. - beware of pickpockets, who are often in crowded buses. Dont make purchases by hawkers: the stuff is usually fake and very bad quality. - if you want to relax you could enjoy the parks. Many are very beautiful, large, not crowded and perfect for a break, especially Villa Pamphili and Villa Ada. In sunny days you can sunbathe like on the seaside (and naturally you can also reach the seaside, which in summer is much less still, however!) - dont forget that June the 29th is a holiday in Rome.

yes, some about the restourant, don't eat in restaurant in the centre of the town, like near fori romani, colosseum, piazza navona, piazza di spagna, termini station etc, they are very expansive and the food si not the best in rome.
We romans prefer trastevere for very special food, near the tevere river, but some of them are expansive too, check the list price before enter.
:)
if you like milkshake, there's one little place in front of the colosseum really suggestive and not too expansive, with really good milikshake.
and if you like cake and sweets be sure to ask for sicilian sweets, like cassata or cannoli, i think they are the best of italian sweets
and remember to visit villa celimontana, one of the most beautiful, but forgetfull park in rome.
I really adore singapore, please, look at the sky for me, there
:)
