Does the Gordon make a good, calm, obedient, loving pet? Does anyone have one just as a pet and not a hunter?

I have a Gordon Setter. My dog is calm and sort of aloof in the house, very willing to please, affectionate to a point and playful. I adopted her when she was a year old from the Gordon Setter Rescue. She was a stray found with an electronic collar. I think she was lost while hunting. She has been trained to hunt or maybe it is just her instinct to track and point.

Our dog is a good house pet but needs to be exercised everyday. We don't use her for hunting. She wouldn't be happy just to walk on a short leash. I take her for a 30 minute or more hike in a field and woods once or sometimes twice a day when I have time. I let her run free. It is not near any roads so it's safe. They are close working dogs so they tend stay close to you going no further than 50 feet or so and keep running back to check on you. You need to train your dog to come when called before doing this. A fenced in yard is almost a must with these dogs.

If you like to jog I'm sure a daily jog will be sufficient but a run in a dog park or woods once a week would be nice. If our dog didn't get that kind of exercise every day she would become depressed and get into trouble chewing things when left alone. They don't do well being left alone all day five days a week.

Gordons are great with children and are rather clownish. Ours loves too swim and will even retrieve to a point. When these dogs get tired of repeating the same trick or command they just say "I'm bored, I want to do something else now." I have seen some used for agility.

Gordon Setters are wonderful dogs but they can be a lot of trouble if not obedience trained with a gentle hand. They are intelligent dogs and easy to train.

Males can be more dominant and are larger. Our female weights 62 #'s and has a very sweet personality. A submissive female would be your best dog in this breed if you want one for a pet. Field dogs have less fur than bench dogs. Ours is a field dog and only needs her fur trimmed on the tail and feet. she is 7 years old and still has the energy and playfulness of a young dog.

You never know what kind a personality they will turn out to be, they are sort of unpredictable so getting an adult dog, you will know what you are getting. They are also very healthy, and live to be 10 or 12 but I heard of some that live much longer. You can find purebred ones in petfinder.com.

Good luck in finding the right dog for you.

i comprehend a lot of human beings hunt with Irish Setters, and that they do a robust activity, yet i might pick a Gordon Setter over the Irish. they seem extra into working than the Irish Setter. i individually won't be in a position to assert that i've got considered a "hyper" Irish Setter, nonetheless. all of those I even have properly-known have been lazy! i will show you how to already know one element approximately the two of your options: Setters are incredibly no longer suitable for "farm canines". in case you will get one, save it indoors. If it won't be in a position to be indoors, discover yet another breed. Their fur mats and collects burrs, and that they are incredibly no longer very chilly tolerant. they have a bent to run, and to come across difficulty in the event that they are not supervised. they are very "cuddly" canines who incredibly like to be with their proprietors, and that they could be with their proprietors as much as conceivable in the event that they are to be suitable experienced. they are not as basic to coach as many gun-canines, and that they've an inclination to be the two obdurate and delicate emotionally. they are in a position to't cope with negativity in any respect...ALL education could be beneficial. they are fantastically intelligent, and that they provide up extremely...in case you yell at them, they end attempting...they think of that's what you like. I even have an English Setter-and comprehend some Gordons and a number of different Irish Setters-mutually as all 3 are very comparable, the Gordon might in all threat be the finest to possess (I nonetheless love English Setters, and can pick one lower back...I choose their character).
