Well it depends on your cultural background. In that aspect it can mean many things. In the Japanese culture suicide is still an honorable way to atone. In the US it is not acceptable.

It's the way you not only respect yourself,but others as well. It is the nature of doing what is right and proper(especially when keeping your word) when everyone else is taking the easy way out.
