Pain killers are also called as analgesics. These are of two types — narcotic and non-narcotic. The former acts on opeoid receptors and can cause drowsiness. They are potent analgesics and are used for extreme pain.

Examples are Morphine, Methadone, Pentazocin. Non-narcotic analgesics are used for milder pain and do not cause drowsiness or sedation.

They produce inhibition of arachidonic acid cyclooxidase enzyme (cox) and thereby inhibit production of prostaglandins. Actions vary from irreversible time-dependent, inactivation of enzymes like Aspirin.

Rapid, reversible, combative inhibition like Ibuprofen and rapid, reversible, non-combative inhibition of enzyme, like Paracetamol.

If you are asking from curiosity you can get better answers on the internet. There are even sites that compare the different types.

If you are asking to find out what type you should take, or use please don't use any advice you get here. Most of it is imcomplete, and the rest of it is wrong. You could ask a doctor. You could even ask the pharmistist at your local drug store. They have had advanced training on drugs, how they work and how they interact with each other. Please use them for credible information.
